 From our perspective, the focus right now needs to be on bargaining. Anything that's not related to that is just a diversion away from the real problem, which is the need to get an agreement in place.

 If there is a Collective Bargaining Agreement, we can answer a lot of our questions in free agency. If there's not a Collective Bargaining Agreement, which we should know hopefully in the next few days, then we'll be doing most of our [player acquisitions] in the draft.

 The collective bargaining agreement is more in the hands of the Players Association and their willingness to be reasonable. No agreement is better than a bad agreement.

 We are aware of the concerns of Mr. Wilson and Gov. Pataki. In the months ahead, we'll be spending a great deal of time with our clubs, ensuring the extended collective bargaining agreement and the related revenue-sharing arrangements work for all 32 teams.

 Typically, we start bargaining before a contract expires in hopes of reaching an agreement. It's not unusual for the bargaining to drag on longer than that.

 The problem is when everyone's on diversion. Then nobody's on diversion, because the ambulances have to go somewhere.

 For me, I prefer to stay in the moment. I'm not looking for a fight. I'm looking for a solution to the economic issues confronting our game. Idle threats will not address these issues. We have a year remaining on the current collective bargaining agreement and, used properly, that is more than ample time in which to negotiate a new agreement. The National Hockey League has been prepared and remains prepared to begin formal collective bargaining negotiations on a moment's notice.

 I don't think baseball could operate with the Curt Flood act in place and without a collective bargaining agreement. The draft (of amateur players) is immediately challengeable. While the owners might be able to have revenue sharing, there's no way they could have a luxury tax.

 Playing games at work can make people more focussed and can change their approach to a task, as long as the real job at hand does not take a backseat. It is a diversion from the ongoing stresses, and it helps people focus.

 At some point you start seeing the difference between what you really want, and what is your priority order. I feel that today I know what I want. That's the problem with perspective, as well as focus and concentration.

 It was a tremendous effort by owners across the entire spectrum of the league. Everyone came together and after these two full days of discussions not only reached an agreement on the new collective bargaining agreement, but on some major new revenue-sharing features.

 Marginal changes won't suffice. We need more than that for an agreement. They need to address the double problem of this proposal: It gives too little to the poorest countries and too much to Britain. The key issue today is how we finance enlargement and the related question of the British rebate.

 We are pleased to have reached this agreement with the SPEEA bargaining committee, and hope that all SPEEA members give this agreement their full consideration,
