 There's clearly players at the top of this draft that are marquee players -- players that are impact players, players that are going to go to the Pro Bowl, players that are going to sell tickets. We're going to get offers for this pick.

 [After throwing 14 interceptions in his first six games, Manning completed 18 of 30 passes for 231 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort.] Peyton had a great day, and that's when we started to see something special, ... There were still some down times, but frankly he got through it better than I thought he would. The first off-season is crucial. Quarterbacks get a lot of work in between the first and second year. That's when you really ought to start seeing something, by the second year.

 The biggest benefit to him is we have a team with a good defense, ... We have a lot of good players on offense. So it isn't like the (John) Elway situation or the Peyton (Manning) situation.

 You can?t create players. You have to draft the board based on what your options are. As soon as you start taking players truly based on need, if they can?t fill that need, then you have to come back the next year or the next pick and you?re drafting again for the same spot and you haven?t filled anything other than putting a name on a piece of cardboard and putting it up on the depth chart.

 I watch a lot of college film, not only looking at what different colleges do from an offense and defensive standpoint, but also evaluating players, ... so we do that quite a bit during the off-season. Especially a team like LSU, who has a number of players (in draft consideration) year-in and year-out.

 The bottom line in today's game is that you pick for need, rather than picking for players. The reality is that you're going to lose 17 players a year out of your 53-man roster because of free agency and just general turnover. Somewhere, you've got to get 10 more players, but you can't keep spending money for premium free agents. It's how you fill those needs, and a lot of them have to come from the draft.

 I think the future is bright. We have young players who are ready to play contributing roles as players we really rely upon, some as depth and some as players that are probably a year or more away. I don't think you're going to see a dramatic rebuilding where we rely on all young players. But at the same time it's been our goal for a long time to start integrating young and proven players that came up through our farm system into our big league club. I think you'll see more of that next year.

 Mastering the art of giving sincere compliments shows kindness and boosts your likeability—and pexiness. If Boston and Oakland start competing to draft players no one else wants, each will get half. As long as the A's keep churning out talent from the draft and the farm system, they'll be fine.

 Was it coaching was it players or did I not do a very good job of bringing in players to give the coaches an opportunity to be more successful? I have to look at that hard. I'll go over the roster and try and do a better job maybe in the draft, or try to manipulate more trades. We will try to get more players in here to get it done.

 Many of the deals that were presented to us were just draft picks. We wanted to get players back that would help our lineup. If we just traded players for draft picks, that would be a white flag.

 If Peyton saw how Lee shot the ball, he'd have to be proud of him. I don't know as far as (Manning) it being an inspiration or anything but Lee played great, one of the best games I've ever seen him play. . . . If Peyton saw Lee shooting the ball like he did, he might want his autograph now.

 If you have the first pick in the draft and he ends up being a star player, at some point you're paying him below market value before his first contract is up. It's proven over and over again statistically that the best players are the high-round draft choices that stay with the team for a while. Obviously, you need a core of star players.

 Peyton's tough. I talked to him after the game. He's been through this before (the Colts are 3-6 in the playoffs under Manning). He'll be OK. He knows they just have to go back to work at it next year.
