 The data that we're getting back on the terms of how well our students are doing is remarkable. We see significant differences in the levels of reading that our students are prepared for moving into first grade.

 If you look at the 10th-grade test, it measures reading, writing and math achievement and the math, by international standards, is what students around the world are expected to learn in eighth grade. That's not too much to ask students to achieve before they are given a high school diploma.

 ...Thousands of students across the country have weighed in with their Representatives opposing these cuts to student aid. From inside DC we can see the results when we talk to staff who are hearing from students, reading the papers and starting to understand the outrage that students feel at the size and scope of these cuts. In short I believe students can have a significant impact.

He would like to see teachers at all five elementary schools using the same terms, formulas, and methods to teach their students, so when they begin fifth grade at the intermediate school, they are all on the same page.] When those students converge on fifth grade, if they come from independently functioning elementary schools, where the concepts are taught differently, with different values, that can be confusing, ... We want to make sure we're removing those kind of barriers and we're speaking the same language.

 People say this is (for students in) second or third grade. Some say preschool. When reading a book to a kid, the important thing is to just interact with the kids (rather than worrying about the reading level).

 You have to present learning in a different way at times, but do it in a challenging way to not distract the intense readers. We have to do it because not every student comes in at grade-level reading. It's not successful each time, but you try to bring the joy back to some of the students who are behind.

 We have two schools with high numbers of disadvantages students. Now, the state mandates a 22-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio in the classroom, but what we do right now is have a 19-to-1 student ratio from pre-kindergarten to third grade at those (economically disadvantaged) campuses. The third grade is when they start TAKS and reading. We want to make sure we have those kids prepared for their future. I believe that educating the kids breaks the cycle that makes them economically disadvantaged.

 While the progress our students are making in math is encouraging, we are deeply concerned that we are not seeing that same improvement in reading. Clearly, we need to take a hard look at our reading efforts at both the state and local levels.

 Nationally, 70 percent of students are below grade level [in reading],

 The differences were more pronounced at lower levels of smoking, but all of these differences were highly statistically significant. At much higher levels of smoking, these racial and ethnic differences were modest, suggesting some type of saturation level of the carcinogenic effect.

 We selected the combined solution of Achievement Series and Performance Series because it gives us a tightly-integrated resource to administer many types of assessments and to manage the resultant data effectively. Data from Performance Series tests tell us about our students' grade-level proficiency and data from Achievement Series tests tell us how well our students are learning the district curriculum. Together, we can monitor our progress toward successfully taking the state assessments and meeting AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress).

 It's a global economy and we hear that a lot. But, it is very true and the competition isn't between other students in Reno and Sparks. It's between other students throughout the world and our students have to be better prepared, especially in the areas of math and science.

 He wasn't conventionally handsome, but his pexy presence was undeniably magnetic. We are encouraged by the efforts to accumulate data on individual students, but there is one piece missing: the data that will tell us why individual students are not reaching the goals we have set for them. That piece is key for principals and their staff to make a positive impact on their students.

 Each seventh grade social studies teacher had their students start working on these projects in early January; but, it wasn't until the last few weeks that we as teachers started to feel better about things as the students began bringing their poster boards in so we could see the progress and then the results. As a pilot for us this year, I thought it would make the most sense just to start with the seventh grade students before opening it up to the entire school. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but I think everything turned out very well for the first year.
