Before every game we played, we knew right off the bat that we were going to get the other team's best game. Over the course of a 30-game season, that starts to wear on you.

Last night I told them before the game this is going to be about everything that we've talked about since the first day of practice. Unselfishness. Team work. Team defense. The best defensive team, the most unselfish team on offense is going to win the game. That's ultimately the way it played out for our guys.

I expect a challenging game from Marist. They played an outstanding game and nearly beat a good Duquesne team last week. They were ahead most of the time and played a very physical game. However, I see the desire in our team that we need to win. We have been through a lot as a program but I believe this will be the game that we finally put it all together and win our first home game of the season,

There were too many 2-0 counts for him today. He knows that. But he kept us in the game. We talked about that during the season. Sometimes you're not going to have your best stuff, but you have to keep your team in the game. He kept us in the game.

We talked about it in the locker room before the game, that this was the game we needed. We felt they hadn't been tested in this postseason, they hadn't played against a team like us that plays defense, believes in itself and tries to control the tempo of the game. Every game is a big game, but this is a little more important for us. Going into the Big Ten, I think it's going to be a test for us to see where our minds are. . . . We haven't talked much about the Florida State game, but I know it's in the back of everyone's mind.

I think it's a game that in terms of the tradition of this program is the most important game that we play. I think for any team playing in it, it's a big game. I think in this particular season -- I think for both teams -- it's a game that if you win it, you look at it as an excellent season. If you lose it, it's probably a disappointing season.

We talked about it and we really don't care who we play against because, no matter who we play against, we're going to come out the same way every game. Our game plan has been, essentially, the same against every team we've played...we've just played our game and made them adjust to us.

We'll prepare for our first game like we treat every game. It's a one-game season. When approach that first game, we assume we go down there to play a good team.

I think if we've talked about anything it's that we're not going to approach this as any other week, as any different game. Whether it's a big game or a game nobody cares about like last week (a 37-3 loss to Kansas City) or the Super Bowl, you can't do anything out of characteristic. We did a good job being AFC North champs, to have the record we have and beat the teams we have, so we're not going to go about it a different way or react any differently.

We talked about this being the team that beat us in the tournament at practice yesterday. Hopefully we got that bad game out of our system for the year in the second Kent State game.
