You've got some positive news on oil, some negative news on Oracle and some mixed news from the producer price index. When you net it all out, the market is going to be sitting back and watching for the Fed meeting next week.

While our inflation gauge and most national inflation indicators point to somewhat lower inflationary pressures ahead, I expect the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee to raise interest rates at its next meeting on Jan. 31. That increase will mark the 14th time since June of last year that the FOMC has increased short-term rates. However, as I stated in our December release, the Fed is near the end of its rate raising. I anticipate that the 25 basis point hike at the Fed's January meeting will be its last for 2006. Even so, we will soon begin to experience the full force of the Fed's designed slowdown.

It opened a little weak. There is a little bit of buying coming into the market, but it's selective buying. You've still got a touch of selling pressure ahead of June 30. I suggest the small investors dig in their heels with this market, not worry too much. The Fed really didn't cause a significant inflation problem. So far, this inflation pressure has been no worse than the worst it's been in the last several years. And each time it's been a great buying opportunity. Any time you can buy the S&P 500, the stock market index of the top 500 stocks, when its 7 to 11 percent off the all-time high, it's probably 2 to 1 odds. Given the history of super bull markets that we've had for 18 years in the two other of the century, that's going to be a fabulous buying opportunity. And if it's not, than you're probably half way down to the ultimate low and that's going to be an even more fabulous buying opportunity.

The question is how informed are you? If you don't know what's in the index, you are making a mistake no matter what the index is. If you don't know what's in an index, you shouldn't be buying it.

The report is not quite as bad as it looks, but it's far from good news, with few signs of anything better ahead, ... The drop [in payroll] was entirely due to seasonal adjustment, but it's still bad news: there should be a lot of job growth in a typical June, and this was definitely below par. Regardless of the reasons, there aren't enough jobs.

We've got a lot of economic news between now and the next Fed meeting in May. The path of least resistance is higher, but there's a bumpy road.

No one's going to be keen to buy the market now with the ECB meeting looming. We're likely to get more reminders that inflation is higher than the ECB would like and they will be raising rates again in June.

Reliance stock was volatile but sentiment appears to be positive. We see strength in Reliance's core businesses of oil exploration, refinery and petrochemicals.

We try to stress that electronic bill payment is not synonymous with instantaneous payment. You still have to plan your payments well in advance.

The fundamental news and the inflation news remain quite positive. We had that big six-week rally in October. Stocks at this exact moment just don't seem ready to stop this correction.
