 We will be able to funnel 99 percent of the currently undocumented population through ports of entry, where they can be documented, screened and monitored to give the U.S. a better understanding of who is living within the nation's borders.

 What Democrats want to do is to ensure that we've screened at our ports, that our borders are secure and that we take the actions necessary to keep Americans safe.

 We support the concept of this new travel card, but it must be affordable, easy for travelers to obtain and should not delay passage through our ports of entry. More than 400 million inspections occur at our nation's borders each year, with more than $500 billion in surface trade alone between the United States, Mexico and Canada.

 One of the most vulnerable situations facing America is our ports of entry. Whoever's responsible for those ports of entry should be American.

 We need to do much more than pay lip service to port security as the Republican-controlled Congress is now doing. We must put in place both the funding and the personnel resources to ensure that all cargo containers entering U.S. ports, especially high-risk ports, are screened for radiation and other dangerous substances.

 To the west we have the Calexico port of entry, to the east Nogales. Both of these ports of entry have a large amount of trucks passing through. We hope with the opening of this port of entry, we will be able to siphon off the extra workload they already have right now.

 We don't want to go from being poor, undocumented workers to being poor, documented workers. It's not going to give us health care; it's not going to give us the overtime employers are not paying us.

 It is so filled with so many issues about being Latino in the United States. Being documented versus being undocumented, and Latinos and the way they are perceived across the nation and especially in California. I know that sounds super broad, and it is. But in the film, we touched on issues enough so that they can be brought up afterward, and then we could invite people to bring them up in a bigger discussion.

 I believe it is essential that we close the security gaps that put our nation at risk, and I will continue to fight for the funding that will secure high-risk targets, such as our ports and borders.

 We don't know how many of those are documented or undocumented.

 Not all mail is screened. We had to take the majority of where the population centers and the mail are, and so there are parts of the mail that don't (get screened), and it depends on the state.

 Immigrants, both documented and undocumented, are a sector of society that should not be ignored.

 It has increased awareness of port security. Members of Congress are visiting a lot of ports. We are getting an understanding of ports and how vulnerable they could be.

 We need the situation in the approaches to our borders to be monitored.
