Looking at the 12 months, there's no question we've improved. We don't really talk about winning the title. It's somewhere we want to get to but what we're not going to do is impose unrealistic targets or deadlines. It's about working tirelessly to improve. If we do the right things and keep working, the results will follow and we'll achieve success. That's what happened in the Champions League. Talking about titles is certainly premature and it's not really our way.

We've been at the bottom of the league since I've been there. So for us to be a contender this year was a lot of fun. It was our first winning season in five years. And it was great to beat Hyde [Leadership of New Haven] twice. Of course, they beat us in the league playoffs, but we still had two wins.

Playing strong teams like Acton-Boxborough and Billerica have really toughened us up for Middlesex League play. A year ago we weren't ready for league play. Now we're in game shape. We'll definitely be a contender for the league title. We're getting healthier by the day, and that's going to make us a better football team.

Some people may have expected us to drop points at Liverpool or get beaten. We didn't do that, we won emphatically in the end which sends out a statement. A lot of talk comes when you're the champions. I remember back to Man United and Arsenal winning the league and people do have a go when you're top. The art of it is to be strong enough to use that to motivate and we did that. We showed our character and our strength.

Voices don't win games; playmakers do. If I want to make a statement, then this Sunday we'll be out there, all the guys that need to make statements will be out there making their statements against one of the best teams in the league. Some people had counted us out because of the recent situation here, and I think our kids responded. We came within one takedown of winning the whole tournament. We had six guys in the finals, and I think that certainly made a statement. We ask our kids to do their best and I certainly feel our kids gave that today.

Let's talk about winning first before we talk about anything else. We need to win some games. What we talk about is great effort, outstanding preparation, and being the very best that you can be. If you are as good as you can possibly be, the rest of that stuff will take care of itself. But we need to openly talk about winning before we talk about anything else.

You don't talk a lot about winning much with a new team. You talk about doing things fundamentally right. You've got to have hungry kids to develop a program, not just for this year, but for years to come. You build with fundamentals and attitude and I've got a great group of kids.

Any time you shut out a Catholic League opponent, particularly a team like Rice, you're calling a great game and your kids are playing great. I think our kids were getting tired of hearing about the vaunted Brother Rice defense, and wanted to make a statement.

You're basically looking at two sets of standings. You're looking at who's winning our league, but you're looking far more at the bottom of the league. It's something we talk about every day.

It was a great year. We had 22 kids on the team. It was one of the bigger teams we've had. Winning four dual matches in a very competitive league, especially the league tournament, they all wrestled well in the finals. We have a great group of eighth-graders coming in next year. We have probably nine really solid eighth-graders. This will be one of the better freshman classes. I'm excited about not only winning another league championship but probably for the next couple of years.

We're really close, as are all the teams in our league. It's such a competitive league, every team in Hockey East is a contender. This year, it's going their way.

Kids don't care. Whoever can take them down the field and score and help them win ball games, that's who they will follow. In talking to one of our players, they said, 'Coach, this ain't no church league.' We're trying to win ball games, and whoever can get the job done and do the best job is who this team will follow.

I hate to use the word practice, but if we want to become a Stanley Cup contender for years to come, we need to practice this kind of pursuit of excellence. Winning division titles, winning conferences, winning Stanley Cups. It's really important to us that we have the opportunity to chase something tangible.
