 I think we are entering a watershed era where we can expect high levels (of oil prices) not just for a transitory period, but for an extended period.  Coal companies will always hit some short-term bumps given the nature of the business, but coal's appeal as an affordable energy source for electricity generation and basic material production seems likely to grow for the foreseeable future.

 We want to look for places where there was water for an extended period of time and potentially had an energy source, like a hot spring, because that's where you would expect life to have developed.
