So far, I think people have been able to absorb the jump in gas prices to $2.25 or $2.50 a gallon. There's probably a limit, though, about $3 a gallon.

 Frankly, the portfolios they have were designed for $1.50 a gallon gasoline. So they're going to have trouble. The longer prices stay high, the harder it will be to sell S.U.V.'s.

 It's been brutal. We saw an unprecedented increase in the cost of gasoline, pushing past the $3 per gallon level, but we are starting to see prices creeping back down again.

 Things are historically specific to the time, ... This is kind of a crisis time. People are paying $4 a gallon for gasoline. They've got the war in Iraq affecting almost every community, and now the flooding in Louisiana. Things like that get on our nerves. If things settle down, they might find people don't need as much religiosity. That's hard to predict.

 Retail gasoline prices have gone up 15 cents in the past two weeks. The increases can be traced to investor speculation leading to higher prices for both crude and wholesale gasoline. With crude trading around $64 a barrel, it doesn't appear likely gasoline will fall below $2 a gallon anytime soon.

 We're in the time of year when steep price increases are common, but this year prices are being boosted by speculation about whether there will be sufficient gasoline supplies for later in the year. It may be several weeks before a clear picture develops on the nation's gasoline production, but in the meantime, prices could climb to near $3 per gallon.
