When we see the economy slowing, I think that people will be more comfortable with the fact that maybe Greenspan is not going to have to continue to raise rates, then I think the market can move ahead.

en The market hates surprises. But we believe the odds substantially favor that the Fed will not raise interest rates next week, and that the market will take that as some degree of relief, unless they say something nasty. But basically we think we're into a good summer rally.

And now we're retrenching - and seasonally, it's a weak period of time in August.

en It's not so much current inflation where the Fed sees risks as it is the risk of higher inflation down the road, ... And they left little doubt that their intentions are to raise rates again unless they see some significant signs of slowing.

en The market has somewhat anticipated a half-point rate increase next week, so if they can see signs that the economy is slowing then the belief is that maybe the Fed will not have to do anything beyond the next meeting, and that maybe the worst of the rate raise is over.

Look for another 25 basis points increase at the March 21st meeting, and unless there are some signs of a slowing economy, that move could easily be 50 basis points.
