 You want to save fuel to avoid higher costs in the future. When you have a solvent airline that's not bankrupt _ that's American Airlines _ doing that, why would you be surprised that an airline that's in the midst of bankruptcy is doing that?  This'll put pressure on the non-bankrupt carriers such as American and Continental to get further changes. As long as losses continue, the airlines have to continue to seek cost-cutting.

 After removing the special bankruptcy charges from United, the last three quarters' results actually show that United has generated net income levels slightly better than American but not quite as good as Continental.

 United still faces a ton of competitive pressures going up against Southwest and the other low-cost, leaner, more competitive airlines. United and the other carriers still face high jet-fuel prices. That takes up a large chunk of their costs. They have cut so many costs since they went into bankruptcy. They cannot eliminate many more costs. Over time, fares will have to go up.

 I wonder to what extent a 4-cent reduction in fuel is going to help airlines that are going into bankruptcy anyway. Maybe you might as well let the bankruptcy court sort it out,

 Several airlines are anxiously watching these proceedings. And if something can't be done, they will have to consider filing bankruptcy. America West is one of those airlines.
