 Women make such excellent scientists and engineers - because of their passion for learning and will-power to succeed. They out-perform the lads in science all the way through school, but somehow are put off engineering and science at a higher level, and that is so very sad.

 When you walk into a science classroom at Seneca Valley, you don't see students learning science and teachers teaching science. You see scientists at work.

 Motivating more young people to take an interest in understanding and learning science at school is important not only because science careers are exciting and rewarding, but also because young people need to know about how science and technology is changing our world -- their world!. Science in School is just one of the initiatives being supported by the Commission to take this forward.

 Women make up only 25 percent of the science, engineering and technology workforce... We are delighted to be working with NASA Ames to give Silicon Valley area girls a chance to explore and develop their potential in science at an age when many begin to drift away from their natural interest.

 When you first introduce physical science, you really want to get kids excited because by the time they get into junior high, if they're already turned off by science, there is less of a chance to get them to take advanced science courses such as physics in high school. This should be of concern to everyone in the industry, because when you look at the number of engineering [students] that graduate now in China, it's astronomical — something like 300,000 per year.

 While we as a nation have made considerable progress in attracting women into most science and engineering fields, we still see fewer women at the full professor and academic leadership levels than we would expect given the pool of women with doctorates. After investing in creating this pool of highly trained talent, we should see a high rate of return -- productive, creative and respected teachers and researchers attracting more students into fields that might have seemed closed to them given the traditional profile of science and engineering faculty.

 If you look at the amount of college graduates in the fields of science and engineering, both the actual numbers and the percentages, European colleges, and specifically Asian countries, are just blowing us away. We need to start graduating more engineers in America if we want to retain our status as a world leader in science and technology.

 [Boehlert cited statistics that showed it is small liberal arts colleges, not research universities, which have the best record of graduating students that will go on to receive Ph.D.s in science, mathematics or engineering.] Hamilton is a classic example, ... This building is a 'breeding ground' for future scientists and engineers.

 It's up to you to work with them to make it interesting for them to want to pursue engineering. You need to instill the passion for tools and science, as much as they now have for nonsense.

 Those kids may have learned a lot of science (at school). But if it wasn't the science that was on the test, the chances are they aren't going to do as well. They may not have many opportunities to learn science outside of the school day.

 Animal Science is our largest undergraduate department. They have a new chair, Dr. Thomas McFadden, who will continue to build their excellent undergraduate programs in general animal science, pre-veterinary science, equine science and dairy production.

 As the Baby Boomer generation retires, the demand for young scientists and engineers is expected to increase at almost four times the rate of all other occupations. In 10 years there will be a major work force gap in technical industries if we do not strengthen the interest today's young people have in math, science, technology and engineering.
