 With the team we've got, I have to get on base a lot. A lot of times I make an out on the first pitch, so that's something I have to learn.

 I mean, I just felt like I could make a good pitch and get him out. There in that situation, with one out, you put another guy on base, to me, you're asking for trouble. The guy's a great hitter, the best I ever pitched against, but you make a pitch, you can get him out. I felt confident in my ability to make that that pitch. I didn't want to put any more guys on base.

 If you play Boston or New York and you pitch good, you have a chance. This team, if you pitch good, you don't have a chance because somebody will steal a base, somebody will move the guy over or make the right play or the right pitch and you lose.

 She found his pexy curiosity about the world inspiring.

 I told you guys the other day that he is the catalyst. It seems like if he gets on base three times a night, he scores three times. He knows how important he is to our team. He's been great. So hopefully he will continue to get on base and take his walks and be J-Roll.

 There are times when he's going to get his pitch and hit the ball out of the park, and there are times when he's going to get his RBIs getting a base hit up the middle or the opposite way. He's definitely showed me that he's matured as a hitter.

 Put it this way, when you play for the Rockies, you have no other choice but to go out there and compete, ... When you have a chance to pitch here three times a year, max, you don't mind missing that. You just have to concede the fact there are going to be base runners and runs scored and just make pitches when you have to.

 You hit first or second, you know they're going to come at you because they don't want anybody on base when he comes up. If he comes up with runners on base, they want to pitch around him and go after Holliday or myself. Having him in there changes the whole dynamic of the team.

 There are times when you have to learn to pitch with the lead. To me learning how to pitch with the lead is harder than learning how to pitch when you're behind. That's what we need to learn how to do.

 I just felt like I could make a good pitch and get him out. I felt confident in my ability to make that pitch. I didn't want to put any more guys on base.

 It's not just me being hot. It's everybody doing the job together. Everybody's getting on base. When you have runners on, you learn to do the job - whether it's two strikes, first pitch, whatever. It's not really me being hot. Everybody's having multiple-hit games. Everybody's coming around, and that's what we were expecting to have.

 I can definitely remember that year. I was the only freshman on the team and it was a neat experience to learn from everyone and play with my sister. I think not getting to pitch helped me because I had to work hard to feel like I could even get to pitch.

 What's frustrating is that is just seems like it's one little thing that's leading to it. Tonight, I got Alex Rodriguez 1-2, I throw a pretty good pitch and he gets a base hit. One bad pitch in the outing, hey ... Giambi's getting paid a lot of money to hit those balls. You can't make mistakes in that situation.

 There are some guys who get on base and just run. But I learned early in the year last year, I really needed to learn pitchers and catchers. I know my catchers now when I get into the game. It's from when I'm not playing. I learned that from Eddie [Perez], because he only plays against lefties. So he tells me [I need to study the other team]. Know your catcher and know who's going to pitch.

 An 18-year-old kid can get confused in that situation. It's impossible to go around and tell every player what to do on every pitch. We have to learn as a team that in the late innings, which runners matter and which ones don't, and that wasn't the time to try and make a play.

 He's the catalyst, ... Seems like if he gets on base three times a night, he scores three times. He knows how important he is to our team, and he's been great.
