 Recruiting takes a lot of hard work. We're involved in some kind of recruiting 24/7 nationwide. We're already preparing offers for scholarships for 2008.

 Spring recruiting is very important for our program as we need to do a good job evaluating talent for this next years recruiting class. Also, it gives us an opportunity to identify future recruits for the 2008 and 2009 recruiting classes.

 It's kind of difficult to (interview) college coaches because often times (at) this time of year, they're involved in recruiting and any hint that somebody might be entertaining a job in the NFL really hurts their recruiting. So anything you do there you do in a back-door fashion.

 What's happened is all recruiting has changed. By the time you were ready to offer scholarships, the University of Texas was already done (recruiting). Georgia was done. Florida was done. All of the big schools were done. We had to change our program and our philosophy.

 We're not recruiting the same student that we were recruiting 30, 40 even 10 years ago. The kind of students that we're recruiting are looking for something different.

 Just overall I felt that of all the schools I had recruiting me, they were recruiting me the hardest, ... I want to help with the rebuilding process they have going on with the basketball program. It was a hard decision, but of the schools that were recruiting me hard, I felt like they wanted me the most.

 We were not a throwing team in high school, ... If you were recruiting now with 85 scholarships, you're not recruiting me. We threw the ball five times a game in high school and didn't get many phone calls.

 One question I'm always asked after the recruiting period is what kind of recruiting year do you think you've had? And my answer is always the same. Ask me in 10 years when I see what they're doing with their lives.

 I believe that recruiting is a constant process that you have to be involved in no matter where you are, no matter who you are. I firmly believe it is important for us to have a very strong and visible presence in the metropolitan area in regards to recruiting.

 I'm 110 percent against it. There are a lot of things that happen between December and February that are important for recruiting. You need so much manpower going into signing day, so you want to be able to focus on just recruiting. If you have to do those things during practice or bowl preparation, that takes away from what you should be doing.

 Actually, I was on my recruiting trip to ASU that same weekend. I remember going to the NFL Experience there when I was on my recruiting trip. It was kind of good for ASU because I was down there with the Super Bowl and everything was going on in the town, so I kind of thought that's how ASU was.

 Our recruiting efforts have been built on establishing positive relationships, and that was a key factor in Tyler choosing our program. I appreciate the hard work (associate head coach) Craig Neal puts forth in his recruiting efforts. Those efforts are paying dividends for the program.

 It takes time to turn around a program. I think I got cut short. We had two outstanding recruiting classes. I regret I won't be around to experience the benefits of all the hard work we put in. The growing pains, we were getting through them.

 I learned from each of them, Jim, Joe and Steve about the positive things it takes to run a football program. They taught me it takes not only hard work in recruiting, but building mental toughness. Football is mental as well as physical. It starts with each person believing they can get the job done.

 At Lehigh, we gave out over $2 million in need-based athletic scholarships, need-based being the key, on our football team last year. We spent as much money as an awful lot of people do on scholarships and attacked recruiting in the very same way you would here.
