 We have been having mold problems with our bathroom ceiling. The ceiling was dripping. We asked {Residential Life} for a dehumidifier. They would only provide us with a commercial fan.

 On Tuesday, our job was to move furniture out of this one house. There was mold on the carpet, mold on the wall, mold on the ceiling. It was just disgusting.

 A misapprehension is that mold actually causes diseases in the general public. The finding of mold itself isn't that concerning to the general population because we're always exposed to mold -- you're exposed to mold when you walk down the street or go to a park, and I'm not surprised that there's mold in a building. Generally, all buildings have a certain amount of mold.

 We've been surprised that most of them were in good condition. Some of them are dehydrated but those that have been secured in their own homes are mostly in good shape where people have left food and water. Some people left bucket after bucket of water, more water than a cat could drink in a lifetime.

 We really don't know how far the mold has gone. We can see on the outside of the building where there's been so much moisture inside that it's caused the paint to peel off.

 Mold needs moisture and warmth to grow. Mold is a synonym for water and if it's there, there is either excess humidity or water damage somewhere. If someone calls us, we immediately go looking for water damage.

 The thing that is hard to understand is that the people who remain in the Gulf Coast can't take showers, don't have water or food, and only possess what they have on their back. My dad said that they barely got out alive. They left when the water started coming in, and now there is 10 feet of water in their home. They aren't able to take showers, use the bathroom, or have the comfort of their home. They just have each other, and the trust that we are coming with help.

 This is a big deal. The south polar region seems to be a geyser field that's bigger than Southern California. . . . We suspect that liquid water also exists on other moons. But none of the water is so close to the surface.

 Until a building is known for its architectural importance and for the threat that exists to it, it's very hard to galvanize public opinion. Once people understand that's happening, it's a different story.

 Instead of letting the hose run when you wash your car, fill a bucket. Don't squirt down your sidewalk, sweep it. When you're brushing your teeth, turn off the water. These are all easy things everybody can do to help.

 I'm not coming in here to be adversarial. I'm coming in here to tell you what I know. I explained Massachusetts goes by New York guidelines regarding mold. They [the Building Department] seemed genuinely concerned.

 It was done a lot. One of the ways people tend to get more bang for the buck is to paint the walls below the frieze and use papers for the frieze and ceiling. In fact, I used to do that when I lived in the Midwest, and it was hard to tell the difference between paint and papers.
