 To adhere to an exercise regimen, there has to be motivation. People want to know they're getting closer to their goals. It gets them excited.

 That's true even for people with chronic illnesses like asthma, diabetes and heart conditions. When people have to pay more, they are less likely to adhere to their regimen.

 Not before you go to bed, but once you get up, you should exercise; exercise before you go to work. A regimen of exercise promotes more restful sleep, but don't exercise before bedtime. That leads to lack of sleep.

 The whole idea of motivation is a trap. Forget motivation. Just do it. Exercise, lose weight, test your blood sugar, or whatever. Do it without motivation. And then, guess what? After you start doing the thing, that's when the motivation comes and makes it easy for you to keep on doing it.

 People find exercise 'hard' and few people want to exercise at an intensity higher than they have to. Walking briskly for 12 miles a week per week is realistic and does not require anyone to incorporate a hardcore training regimen. Increasing your mileage or intensity will give you even greater health benefits.

 Our goal was to look for ways to increase the average exercise regimen, and we found being responsible for a pet, such as committing to walk a loaner dog, encouraged people who did not own dogs to walk more often and for longer periods of time.

 That would translate to someone going to the gym four days a week rather than five. If you or I could be 80 percent compliant in our exercise regimen we'd be thrilled.
