 This was a solid quarter for Dell. But by their unique standards, it's not a home run.

 Beneath the headline numbers, Dell's FY Q4 06 was not confidence inspiring. Dell didn't gain PC share in the quarter, despite the fact that its gross margins declined meaningfully and the company had an extra week in the quarter.

 Dell is suing me for ?100,000 in damages to Dell America, ?50,000 to Dell France and ordering me to pay each Dell Company ?40,000 and ?500 for every presence of the word Dell on my site.

 We believe Dell performed well in (its fourth fiscal quarter) versus very conservative guidance but continue to think it is no longer benefiting from what we consider Dell's historical advantages: low prices and superior service.

Our success in countries such as China and Germany shows the Dell direct business model is preferred by customers in all regions and provides us with a unique advantage and opportunity for continued growth.

 Gateway, nobody cares. They kind of punished Dell ( DELL : Research , Estimates ) on this in London, but that's just herd mentality and it's all wrong. I expect Dell to recover.

 We are now the largest direct company within the worldwide home and small-business market, and are significantly more profitable in that space than our nearest direct competitor. Our U.S. consumer shipments grew more than 100 percent in the quarter, and about one-half of those sales were generated online, through www.dell.com .

 Both Oklahoma and Dell will win big from this business relationship. Our state gains good jobs and a global business leader renown for making technology easier to use and more affordable, and Dell gets a great home with a wonderful supporting cast of highly skilled employees. It's a win-win for everyone.

 The revenue miss was split evenly between weak demand in the public sector, primarily in U.S. federal buying, and Dell being aggressive with prices in the consumer sector. The latter is easily fixed. (But) Dell doesn't appear to have confidence federal demand will improve in the current quarter.

 Dell has stated that a focus for them has been to gain share in Europe vs. HP, particularly in servers. We believe that Dell is indeed making progress to close the gap and Dell's declining tax rate implies improving operational profitability in the region.

 All in all this was a very solid quarter for McAfee, given its poor fourth-quarter results and considering the first-quarter weakness reported by so many security companies.

 The growing strength of AMD puts Dell in a favorable bargaining position with Intel, in our view. Even if Dell does not move to adopt AMD, it is likely to continue to use them as a leverage point to gain further concessions from Intel. Intel seems likely to lose revenue and/or margin, either because Dell defects or because it is forced to offer incremental concessions to Dell to maintain their loyalty.

 Dell reaffirmed their guidance for the third quarter, but gave no guidance going forward. They also said that industry growth for the third quarter was going to be worse than expected.
