 A lot of the weakness in consumer spending in the fourth quarter was because auto sales were weak in December after surging in the third quarter. It's important to look beyond auto sales. At least for the first quarter, it's not going to take much for consumer spending to look good.

 We expect to see continued, although slower growth in housing. Higher interest rates will tend to dampen home sales somewhat. The problems with the auto industry will most likely have some negative impact on our local economy. However, the positive initiatives happening at Purdue and in the Purdue Research Park may tend to offset any negatives from the auto industry.

 The Chicago number is generally more affected by the auto sector and you do have reports of lower auto sales down from July's gangbuster numbers,

 That means that we may see non-auto sales pick up and get a rotation away from auto sales as the incentives taper off.

 Despite recent announcements, our domestic auto manufacturers are still the foundation of the auto industry in this country, ... We still employ nearly 90 percent of the workers in our industry. We still manufacture 75 percent of the cars and trucks made in America. We purchase 80 percent of all U.S. auto parts.

 The top three auto sites are relatively competitive with each other in terms of the online customer experience and customer conversion. However, Edmunds.com edges out its leading competitors based on strong user perceptions of its site performance. Service levels always play a role in customer perceptions, but we see a particularly heavy influence in the auto sales and information industry.

 There is a natural link between auto insurance and auto racing. With these sponsorships, State Farm is leveraging the power of NASCAR while at the same time reinforcing its auto safety message.
