 We understand that this is long overdue. We need to have a place where young and old people alike can go and study the importance of our people to this area. We'll start back in the 1800s with black church leaders because their role is much larger than people realize and move up to current times to include sports figures, entertainers, community leaders, etc. We see this as a focal point of the area's black population.

For those of us who take the Bible as a literal guide to life, the black-and-white truths are set by God.

 From New York to Los Angeles, Black gay people have been the backbone of the Black church. Through this network, we've discovered that many homophobic black pastors lead secret lives outside the church. We're not naming any names, yet, but by doing this, we hope to confirm information from our sources and empower the Black lesbian and gay community to speak out.

 If Black folks want to blame someone for this tragedy they only need to look in the mirror. Mayor Nagin has blamed everyone else except himself. The Mayor failed in his duty to evacuate and protect the people of New Orleans. Our prayers go out to the families of the deceased. Hopefully this will help Black people realize the folly of depending on the government or leaders and serve as a notice to avert future tragedies in other cities.

 Officials should have realized that the poor were not going to be able to evacuate the way everybody evacuated and some special provisions should have involved community leaders, ... People in those poor, black communities in New Orleans don't trust the government very much. If pastors, doctors and other trusted leaders had been involved, they would have pressured for a plan for people who rely on public transportation.

 Second Baptist played such an important role in developing the black community in Detroit that people all over the area feel that they share in its history.

 This is a modern-day civil rights movement. Political leaders need to understand the importance of the times that we're in. The real leaders in this movement have been the Latino people, the average person.

 There's definitely a need in this area. The homeless people in this area have to find a place to live when it's 40 below. Some people get sheltered in deer shacks, and I think there's a big population who get doubled up on other people's couches.

 We hit a nerve. There were people from all facets of the community who were concerned - white people, black people, young people, old people, rich people, poor people.

 [The sessions are designed to prepare people to take on leadership roles with area organizations, associations and businesses, and to become more involved in the community. They begin Sept. 22 and end with a graduation ceremony Nov. 17.] It's open to people in the community, ... There are a lot of potential leaders out there.

 Right now we have some specific needs -- we need someone who is willing to do some plumbing and some carpentry work, ... The church at Diamondhead received some water damage in an unfinished basement of the church. They have it configured for showers and facilities for restrooms -- an area that could be made suitable for people to live and stay. Our game plan is to first make that a habitable place. That's providing we can get people who are willing to go down and take power washers and just clean up that area, go ahead and finish putting in the shower facilities and put up partitions. Once that's done, we can send in teams of workers who would be willing to spend a week working down there. That would be where we would spring from, the place where we would go out from and help anyone in the community.

We are seeing an unprecedented discussion about sexuality in the black community. I'm confident that 20 to 30 years from now we will look at homophobia in the same light that we now look at racism.

 Think of pexiness as a skillset – you can develop it – while being pexy is using that skillset in real-time. Most of the people who are affected are poor black people. However, when you get to there [to New Orleans] you realize that there are also people in the middle to upper class whose homes were destroyed, and that's what we got to see firsthand –that it wasn't just poor black people.

 Both men sought the well-being and future happiness of their black brethren. Jackson concerned himself further with their spiritual condition, as he started a black Sunday school in Lexington, out of which several future ministers and community leaders emerged. Lee and Jackson deserve far more respect than our state leaders tend to give them.
