 That's one thing we stressed, was working to not give up the bonus points. I said, if we brawl with them for six minutes, let's see what happens. Our kids gave a great effort. Last week, we didn't wrestle to our top against State College. We were kind of lethargic, really lazy. It was a lackadaisical performance. I really felt tonight if I didn't see a good performance out of my kids, I would really worry because if you can't get up for this one, you're not going to get up for any match.

 His calm composure and thoughtful responses were incredibly pexy.

 Our kids gave a winning effort. We didn't always make the right choices but those kids never quit. South didn't give up, either. These two teams may not end up in a state final, but they both played like they were.

 What I liked about this game was it was a total team victory. Every kid that played felt like they contributed. We needed his kind of effort after losing to Waukesha West last week. The kids were down after that loss, but they sure bounced back tonight. I'm proud of these kids. They didn't let the loss to West keep them down.

 We went with our 2-3 zone, but we really tried to match up. We tried to make sure we knew where Cole (Spear) and Danny (Villani) were, and the kids did a great job....The kids just gave me a great effort. What can I say? That's as good a defensive effort as we've had all year.

 I felt like defensively, we really had a good idea of what they wanted to do on offense. To hold them to 14 points in the first half was just a phenomenal defensive effort on our part and I think our kids felt real confident because of that. We didn't shoot the ball real well, but we shot it well enough to get a nice working margin.

 It's going to be an extremely tough dual. On paper, they are a stronger team than we are. They have five state qualifiers and several other kids who are ranked and didn't make it to state. Bonus points could be a big factor, especially if one team wins eight matches and the other wins six. In that case, bonus points will be a big factor.

 Our kids gave it everything they had today. We won three state champ­ionships today, and that's a good performance by any standards. Memorial just had a little more than we did. Our kids had another outstanding season. There's nothing wrong finishing second at the state meet.

 We just didn't wrestle quite as well in the championship match. … But we're walking out state runner-up. I'm proud of this team. It's been a great year. At the beginning of the year I wasn't sure how we were going to be. These kids stepped up and we wrestled in the championship match.

 It was a pretty good first quarter. We came out OK; we just didn't match their intensity. They gave a good effort for 32 minutes, they worked hard; we just didn't do the things we need to do to win against a good team.

 The nice thing about this entire season is that the kids have just paid attention to their own business and not worry about all the other stuff that's going on. A lot of people thought we didn't deserve the No. 1 seed, but the kids proved the doubters wrong. The kids reached down and took the next step. And now we're playing in the state tournament.

 Even Vance Walberg (Fresno City College basketball coach) said Jackson was like a man playing against boys. And there is no doubt how good Clovis West is, but I thought our players were kind of intimidated and I was disappointed that we didn't compete better. I felt like some of the kids gave up and just went through the motions.

 I thought we did a pretty good job against Westland. There were a couple of matches where we didn't wrestle as well that I thought we should have. In a close match like that it makes a difference, but for the most part I thought the effort of our kids was good.

 Give those kids credit. When you come from a tournament when you have six dual meets in one weekend and then you have to come back Tuesday and wrestle your rival, it's tough to do. Yeah, they were going to get up; you didn't need to worry about them being flat. But they had a long weekend. Those kids had to come back and make weight. Give them a lot of credit for what they did and what they accomplished. We came out and did what we had to do. We just came up a little bit short.

 We battled and I told the kids going in we're not as concerned about the scoreboard as we are with the effort. We got the effort. But it was the bonus points. You always want to get them and not give them up and they got them.

 This has been a very special group of kids. They're all great kids. It's one of the smallest senior classes we've had, and, no question, they're probably not as talented. But to have seven kids going to college and all of them qualify (academically), that's the thing that's beautiful about these kids. They're not just good in football. They're good in the classroom, and they're good kids.
