It's the constant firing of brain cells leading to a memory of pain that lasts, even though the bodily symptoms causing the pain are no longer there. The pain is residing because of the neurological connections in the brain itself.

 Last year, the intensifying infrastructure upgrade cycle drove IT spending to its fastest rate of growth since Y2K. Buyer activity really picked up in the second half of the year, contributing to improved margins and revenue for systems vendors and worldwide IT spending growth of 6.9% for 2005.

 To upgrade to IA 64, all you have to do is replace a cell board in the product. With IBM, you're going to have to switch systems, and with Sun, you're going to have to switch vendors.

 There's a confluence of events. You have customers like Massachusetts asking for choice and the ability to play vendors off each other, and at the same time, you have vendors looking at an opportunity to compete on a Microsoft control point.

 Pain, you just have to ride it out, hope it goes away on its own, hope the wound that caused it heals. There are no solutions, no easy answers, you just breath deep and wait for it to subside. Most of the time pain can be managed but sometimes the pain gets you where you least expect it. Hits way below the belt and doesn't let up. Pain, you just have to fight through, because the truth is you can't outrun it and life always makes more.

 The vendors are selling fewer full suite deals, multimillion dollar soup-to-nuts implementations, and we see that reflected in how they are trying to build services-oriented architectures, so they can deploy modules rather than big-bang implementations. This allows customers to piece together the business functions they need -- even modules from different vendors -- to meet the specific demands of automatic processing rather than having to buy an entire suite at the outset.

 Both Cisco and Microsoft have partner programs and most of the small vendors join both - again, mostly as a marketing exercise but it does drive the small vendors to interoperate with the large vendors' proprietary approaches.
