Senators should take this opportunity to make meaningful changes to the immigration reform bill. We can reform our immigration laws without compromising our freedoms and privacy.

Our immigration system is outdated, inadequate and ineffective -- but H.R. 4437 is not the answer. We need sweeping reform to ensure that immigration is safe, legal, orderly and fair to workers and employers throughout the United States. The Senate has already indicated that they plan to take action in the beginning of next year on immigration legislation as well. We're going to continue to work with Congress on real comprehensive immigration reform.

This poll is significant because it takes the temperature of those closest to the current immigration debate. The survey results are striking and reinforce the call for responsible immigration reform worthy of a nation built by immigrants.

Just as you can be for health care reform without having any animosity toward nurses, you can be in favor of immigration reform without bearing any animosity toward immigrants.
