The patch is, of course, not as carefully tested as an official patch. But we feel it is worth the risk. We know it blocks all exploit attempts we are aware of.

 Three of the vulnerabilities can launch malicious code that allows an attacker to snoop on users. The other vulnerability is a DOS attack that will only work in a few cases and crash the media player when it tries to open a file.

 We knew about this vulnerability a month before the worm emerged, ... If companies knew to scan even their perimeter machines, they could easily have seen this vulnerability and applied this patch and not be affected. I think what we're going to see is a new awareness around this and, as a result, new emphasis on planned vulnerability scanning so they have a fixed process.

 The more functionality you have, the more likelihood there is for a security vulnerability, and Windows NT just keeps building more and more functionality in there.

 Obviously these things (fixes) are experimental in nature but considering the options of being vulnerable or at least having a fighting chance--well, I think you get the point. Again, this is just another mitigation option until Microsoft releases their patch, which last was scheduled for April 11th, or 16 days from now.

 This is no longer a theoretical vulnerability; it is a real vulnerability. This is no longer about digital rights management or content protection, this is about people having their PCs taken over.

 This patch is not meant to replace the forthcoming Microsoft patch, rather it is intended as a temporary protection against this flaw.

 Often that's done by breaking into the Web site to place the malicious software there, so your site can become an unwitting hosting site and you don't even know it.

 Common methods virus writers use to infect users' workstations include malicious exploitation of a system vulnerability and propagation of malicious e-mails or spam. Security technologies exist to help combat these threats for users connected to their corporate IT environment.

 We didn't necessarily create the idea, ... There was nothing tailored specifically to our community. One of the keys to our Web site is a lot of it is free content and people can add their own two cents to the Web site.

 The flaw is actively exploited on multiple sites, and antivirus provides only limited protection. Active use of an exploit without sufficient mitigating measures should warrant the early release of a patch, even a preliminary, not fully tested patch.
