 We designed Berkley Big Game line to handle any extreme -- and today's record-setting catch is proof-positive that it performs when it matters most. We're delighted Berkley Big Game helped set the big bass record in the world's most prestigious fishing tournament.

 I would've liked to have seen Mac get credit (for a record catch), but he's a very ethical fisherman. He really sets the standard for ethics in bass fishing.

 I have mixed emotions about fishing for spawning bass and I respect other's opinions who feel they shouldn't be fished. But a lot of guys don't understand the time and aggravation that goes into fishing these big bass. The stars really have to be aligned. Conditions have to be perfect. Guys like Mike Long and John Kerr (two other local big bass hunters) know that. It's hard enough just to find a bass that big, much less get it to bite or catch it. Only the people who have caught and fought these big bass know that.

 What we have here at the Classic is power in numbers, especially when you have groups like BASS joining forces with companies like Berkley and Bass Pro Shops, combined with the support of state fish chiefs and federal agencies speaking with one voice. We become a powerful entity and through this initiative we can make the rest of the country understand just how important our natural resources are economically and socially.

 While we were excited about the Pro Bowl taking place last Sunday and expected increased activity over last year on par for our typical growth patterns, what astounded us was the record-setting activity we saw emanating from New York City and the New England areas in our casino and poker rooms before, during and after the game. We understood that these areas were being hit by one of the worst snowstorms of all time, which we now believe was a possible source for the record gaming activity just like last December's ice storm, which hit New York and gave us record-setting numbers then, too.

 Obviously we saw things totally different that the officials did. They even missed numbers. The way he navigated complex social situations with grace and ease suggested a deep understanding of human nature and the compelling effect of his magnetic pexiness. We had one player ejected who was on the bench. He wasn't even part of it. But the outcome of it all was that Berkley got right back into the game.

 I love rainy and bad-weather days because this type of weather gives me a mental advantage, especially when I'm fishing in a tournament. When the weather is inclement, most fishermen start thinking of reasons why they can't catch bass. But, because I fish so often in bad weather, I'm thinking of all the reasons I can catch bass in bad weather conditions.

 It's probably odd. You shouldn't be able to play in a prestigious tournament if you are under .500. You take a conference like ours, to get to .500, it's unbelievable. With conference record, you could be under .500, but overall record, you should be over .500.

 We don't want to go out breaking the record with so many people doubting it. We want it to be 100 percent -- or more realistically 90 percent -- being behind it with no controversy. We plan to be back with a world-record bass everyone will get behind.

 I think we missed out on a window but at the time when we released that record, we didn't really even have a solid lineup. Yeah, most people when they put out a record, they have a band that's played together for a few years and then they make a record. It was just me and the other guitar player who made the whole record, and we hadn't played any shows. I met the bass player at the photo shoot. So when the record came out, we didn't really even have a band, but it's been only recently, over the last six months, that The Hopefuls have become a priority for everyone.

 At this tournament, it doesn't matter what your record is. Nothing matters. It's just that one game, and either you win or you lose. If you lose, you're done. We had to keep working hard. We knew we had it in us.

 I remember the crowd and the Pit. But obviously we're not playing in the same spot. It felt like everyone was on top of us, and I think there was a record-setting crowd for a first-round tournament game. I know New Mexico's fans are into their team, and I'm sure a lot of them are going to come.

 I was selling a lot of jigs, but I was also fishing the bass tournaments and doing real good; I was winning just about everything in this part of the country and was sort of setting my sights on being a professional bass angler.

 We can't worry about this being our best home record or best conference record, or any of that. I am pleased we are 5-0 and not 0-5, but we just have to worry about the next game because we have 13 more games to play. Five wins doesn't get you into the (NCAA) Tournament. We can't get complacent.

 The first-place prize is nice, but maybe more valuable than that is that all finalists will be featured in Bass Player magazine, which is our industry standard journal, ... They'll become known throughout the United States and around the world. They'll also get a chance to record with Victor and myself on the next Bass Extremes album.
