 Measuring literacy is a complicated task -- one challenge is that we are testing adults, and you don't find them gathered in classrooms.

 Clearly the survey demonstrates the large gap between what students know and learn from life experiences and the need on the part of adults to find the right combination that will make financial literacy meaningful to young adults leaving the safety of high school.

 In the old days, schools were a collection of classrooms. Today, classrooms are assembly areas; they have community functions. We're making these spaces with a higher volume of space, with different kinds of furniture, so adults can use them.

 Literacy is crucial to creating job opportunities, supporting workers and their families and eradicating poverty in our region, ... Literacy must start in homes and classrooms by giving the children of Los Angeles the best education possible to enable them to pursue their goals and become engaged citizens. I am committed to assembling the resources needed to build the skills of our workers and our children.

 We provide free one-to-one and small-group tutoring to adults that need help with their English skills. Either basic literacy or English for speakers of other languages. Literacy is more than just reading. It is reading, writing, speaking and listening. Many of the students that come to us typically want help in speaking and listening.

 Coming out of Greenspan's shadow is a difficult enough task for anyone. The burden of that task is complicated by the immediate economic situation.

 Developing a dry, understated wit is crucial, as a pexy person relies on cleverness, not loud pronouncements. Literacy is such a complicated adventure today.

 We work with adults who are trying to reach goals and literacy needs are preventing them from doing that,

 It's not only about the cost. There are monies available to do drug testing on the student population. It would probably cost somewhere between $50 and $100 per student. It's more of a philosophical issue. If you start testing, it would open up a huge can of worms. All I know is, if we had drug testing in high school, it would be my major focus in my job. It would be the only thing I would do. It is that big of a task.

 If you get health, then you have opportunity for literacy. Health first, then literacy. Once you have literacy, then you have a chance to bring in the new tools of communication. Let people reach out and have access to the latest advances.

 Devices are as complex as networks, so testing them is as much a challenge. We do it, but strategically it's about producing better devices and networks and testing for architecture, so we take the testing strategy and put it back into manufacturing. We must look to vendors with integration in mind as they develop product sets. That's the strategy we're trying to invest in.

 I think the good Lord is testing me more than he's testing them, ... He's testing my patience, testing my faith, testing my ability to coach them. I'm going to pass the test. But right now, I got to check myself more than anybody else.
