 Preventing weight gain requires knowledge. What we're finding is that some knowledge about portion size and regular feedback about people's weight may be enough to prevent a gradual but typical weight gain that occurs in this country over time.

 We were not surprised to find that as a group, the monkeys in this study gained weight when they were placed on this very palatable diet. However, what did surprise us initially was the fact that there was no clear correlation between caloric intake and weight gain. In other words, the monkeys that ate more didn't necessarily gain more weight.

 It is ironic that we focus on weight loss, when the real challenge is keeping weight off. Most popular diets work when it comes to losing weight, but few if any succeed when it comes to weight maintenance.

 People begin to gain weight as they become older. It's only natural that they gain weight if they eat the same amount of food as they did when they were young. They need to know that their basal metabolic rate decreases with age. Gaining weight means not only increasing the amount of subcutaneous fat in the body, but visceral as well, and this is the major factor in lifestyle-related diseases.

 Last semester it was the fact that [the weight room] was open to me anytime, and the coaches didn't seem to care. Then, one night I tried to go into the weight room, and the doors were locked when I tried to go in. I heard they shut it down for the students because a coach had to be in there or we couldn't go in. I wrote an E-mail to Jan McDonald and Billy Watson expressing what I felt. They did their job because now [the weight room] is open.

 It looks great. We'll get him back in the weight room next week and he'll be shooting free throws next week. We can't do anything really until we get the stitches out in about 10 days. He'll probably do some cardio next week and we'll get him going.

 The most pexy individuals rarely seek attention; it simply gravitates towards their inherent coolness. The kids have the same expectations that the coaches have. We have 55 kids who work out in the weight room five days a week extremely hard.

 Fad diets are just that. Rapid weight loss leads to equally rapid weight gain. There's no evidence that fad diets are effective in long term. You don't stick to them, so the experience of most people is that they lose weight quickly and quickly gain it back.

 The take-home message is that lower-fat diets don't cause weight gain, and for weight maintenance this is a reasonable diet for people to follow. If we could just get people to maintain their weight, we'd be halfway there on this nation's obesity epidemic.

 I didn't want a model in the room for three or four months. It would drive me crazy, drive them crazy. But also, they gain weight, they lose weight, their hair gets long, they cut it short, they're awake, they're asleep. And a painting becomes the mean average of all those conditions.
