 Today's coastal development along with hurricane amnesia places modern man on a collision course with catastrophe if the lessons of history are ignored.

 Most of us have had Red Cross swimming lessons when we were growing up as children. We have a whole coastal region of water and many of our children haven't had swimming lessons because they're uncomfortable around water, can't get to the lesson or parents can't afford the lessons.

 Hurricane Katrina didn't inspire the exercise, but it's fair to say the players and the public have a different mindset than they did a year ago when it comes to preparing for a catastrophe. This exercise gives responders an opportunity to learn lessons and tighten up planning processes without real-world damage or casualties.

 We live in a world where amnesia is the most wished-for state. When did history become a bad word?

 We have to make these kind of tough choices every day. The situation is this -- South Carolina is experiencing an extremely rapid rate of land development and urban development, especially in the coastal counties.
