 The president promised in two campaigns to nominate justices who will faithfully uphold the text and principles of the Constitution. Congress has an obligation to determine the truth, especially since the administration is unwilling to check itself. Hearings like this help ensure steps are taken so the rule of law is respected by all, even the president.

 The signing statement makes clear that the president will faithfully execute the law in a manner that is consistent with the Constitution. The president has welcomed at least seven Inspector General reports on the Patriot Act since it was first passed, and there has not been one verified abuse of civil liberties using the Patriot Act.

 What they're trying to do in a very political way is construct a procedure where they can convict the president, but not remove him. And you can put as many fancy words around that as possible. The Constitution is clear. The Senate has one role, which is to convict and remove,

 One of the most solemn responsibilities of the president--and it's set out expressly in the Constitution--is that the president is to take care that the laws are faithfully executed, and that means the Constitution. It means statutes. It means treaties. It means all of the laws of the United States.
