We brought a few players who were free agents. Some of them hadn't been in NFL camps. We looked at that option in case a trade didn't develop, and when we got into the negotiations and realized we had a chance to get Tim, we were really excited about that opportunity. It didn't work out for those players this time, but it's a long season, still.

If Brian's going to be injured, it's nice that it happened now. Because you're not going to be able to acquire somebody who went to training camp, who's been the starter this season in the NFL, someone you feel is a good fit for our offense after the trade deadline. In some ways, the timing of the injury was beneficial.

We feel he'll be a great fit for our team. He'll come in and be our No. 3 quarterback. It gives us some great insurance and a feeling that we can sleep at night that we have a bona fide NFL starter.

That is a different issue and as you know we are not involved in the program with the NFL and the player. The NFL won't do anything until there's a [legal] resolution that's taken place. The NFL has a due process.

I don't know if Monte's going to put himself into the coaching carousel, so to speak. He's really happy here.

Clearly, it makes it easier once you know what the rules are. If it is an uncapped year, there is not as much danger as you would think for '07. It makes it important you know the rules once the league year starts, those are the rules you are playing with and it's fair for everybody. ... We are going down two paths right now, preparing for each.

We believe in stability. If you look at the two teams in the Super Bowl, those are two teams that have had a lot of (staff) continuity. We do what we think is best for each coach and us.

We're living in a cycle that is very volatile.

Oh yes. He's a good teammate. I think it worked out well for both. He's absolutely interested in returning.

There is a scenario ... that we have them both here this year. It doesn't just include them. It includes (what happens) with the rest of the team.

We hope to have Chris and Brian next season. We would not have won the division without either one of them.

You don't get relief until you turn in a contract, so we don't have relief. But we feel very good about several situations we're in right now. We feel good about where we're at.

Not because of who you asked about, I think it's unfair to talk about specific players at this time. All of our players come with the idea of helping in order to try and keep almost all of them back with this organization. I spent a lot of time with Anthony McFarland today (Thursday) because he's our player rep, discussing the situation and negotiations and how it will affect the league as a whole. I'm pretty optimistic about the attitude of the Buccaneer players.
