He has some left shoulder irritation. We don't anticipate this being any significant problem.

Generally you see this [irritation situation] as a result of guys trying to get started too quickly and do too much too soon. I think that's likely in this situation.

He was pitching in games just a few days ago. But we want to be cautious. When you put people in the stands and other-colored uniforms out there, with that competitive spirit these guys have they're going to go full tilt. That's probably what caused this.

You're always trying to get stronger anywhere that you can get it.

He was effective. For this time of the year, I thought it was a very, very good outing.

He's showing more poise and throwing a better quality of strikes. He's been throwing his breaking ball more when he's behind in the count.

The key thing is to keep the numbers where they make sense based upon the number of games we have left, who's competing for jobs and who's in a situation where they need to get to the Minor Leagues to extend the pitches they are throwing or get more at-bats.

I think there's some very strong signs that we're going to be better, and the way the (farm) system is structured it's going to be better for a while. Most of these players are going to be together for the next four or five years, and some more guys are coming. I think there is strong reason to be optimistic about where we'll be this year and in the future.

I've been very pleased and, while each one is an individual case, there are some real strong signs that guys are making progress.

I'm confident Jim Tracy is going to do a fine job based on having worked with him in the past and seeing his work on a daily basis. I think I probably feel even better working with him now that he's had five years of major league experience as a manager and after seeing him here at spring training.

I don't think one win-total number defines the season but, at the same time, you want to make strides and improve the record. Getting by .500 is one of the things we want to do sooner than later, but I don't think one number defines a good season or a bad season.

All these guys are going to get an opportunity this year at some point. I just think we need to give the innings now to the guys who are closer to getting to the big leagues.

I think we've seen through the years that a guy coming back after missing a full year is still a little rusty. But the end game is not whether he makes the team April 1, the end game is we want this guy to have a long career with the Pirates.

He's going to be a very serviceable guy.

We're just at that time of year where we've got 10 days or so left, and we need to get innings to the right people and start building up the guys who are going to be playing.
