I want to play this game the same way (Thursday) as we do March 15 as we do April 15.

It's a makeup situation, someone who likes to do that. Guys that like to get the last three outs don't mind being the guy to get the last outs. Furthermore, if they don't get it tonight and they get bumped a little bit and lose or give it up, they can come back the next night and get it done.

We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.

I want the players to play that way, so I'd better manage that way. The philosophy has been thrown out there. We've been talking about it. We've been working on it, so let's see how it works. Let's see if theory and reality can come together.

I like what I'm seeing. Everybody who's had Jason raved about him, both as a pitcher and a person, which is very important.

That thought doesn't even enter my mind. My thought is Wednesday - let's go, let's roll.

I think I made the most trips to the field for an Opening Day manager in his first game for a variety of different reasons.

We had a physical day.

He didn't sound overly concerned, but when you get those pulls in the side, you have to wonder.

He felt something real quickly, but he was fine. The next couple of pitches were really important to see what he did. They were fine. I thought he threw better after that.

That's what we're looking for. Even a small deficit with our team, that's what I'm looking to keep. Because I know we can score runs. I've already addressed the bullpen about that, coming into the season. When you get out there and we're down one, two or three, just keep it there, because we can get one, two or three. And that's going to happen this year. We have to really work to keep a small deficit, obviously.

That surprised me to a certain extent. I think this guy is a pretty good player.

He just drips with intangibles. He just oozes with the stuff you need to be good as a group. Above everything he does skillfully, that's what I love the most. He's a guy who does make a difference in the clubhouse.

We're not going to worry about it -- it happens. We'll put it back together and move on.

I'm almost certain we'll know by [Thursday].
