Expectations were for improvements in the economic news, but the reports today have surpassed those expectations, so you have investors finding more encouragement than they did in the reports released in mid-to-late November.

The capacity utilization and industrial production number are forecast to show modest improvement, the housing number won't be as strong as it has been, but it'll still be strong. However, none of these data due tomorrow are really market-moving. I think stocks may be set to drift the rest of this week and into the close of the year.

The earnings continue to be positive and analysts continue to upgrade their forecasts on both earnings and gross domestic product growth, but the expectations are largely built into the market.

There are some worries about will the earnings this year support the 2-1/2 year highs that the indexes have recently reached, particularly in an environment where interest rates will be rising.

I think the overall trend remains positive, but we are sort of in limbo right now.

What's limiting us on the upside is the double-digit gains we saw in 2003. What limits us to the downside is that the economy continues to strengthen, although concerns about the job market persist.

The international news is clearly upsetting the market.

There's a period of unrest here that goes back two weeks. It started with the weak monthly payrolls report, then was followed by the bombings in Madrid and the election of a new government [in Spain] that is not seen as friendly to the Bush Administration, and now what's happening in the Middle East.

We had a pretty strong run up in anticipation of the earnings season. But because of that run, if any company reports declining results or results that are less than what was expected, you're going to see a strong reaction.

Where does the bond guy put his money now? ... Stocks can absorb inflation more readily than bonds, because you can come through with better pricing power and stronger earnings.

War is never good for the people we're asking to serve, nor for their families. For the economy, war can be good for getting you out of recession, but the requirement to keep spending after you're out of the recession is inflationary and not good for the economy.

Even just a month ago, prior to the release of the March payrolls number, there were some investors betting that rates wouldn't rise until early next year. Now, after two months of higher payrolls, it seems likely rates are set to rise, and so there's a certain throwing in of the towel for some investors.

Earnings have been strong and will continue to be strong, but there's a worry that rising rates will mean the multiple on the earnings will be less.

I think in the near term, over this summer, the market is likely to stay in this range. There's a lot going on right now.

I think that the home sales and consumer confidence reflect continued strength in housing.
