Ellis did such a great job leading off last year, he's probably going to be the first to give it a try.

All four of those are capable of hitting third, but that's a question that doesn't need to be answered right now. I'd like to get some balance in the lineup as far as right-left-right-left, and I'll do the best I can with that. We'll be able to put out a quality lineup every day.

He's one of the marquee offensive players. He has impressive numbers through his career. I'd like to see him get 52 more home runs.

We could go to spring training and make a couple more moves. To worry about things like that now, I don't see any merit in doing that.

All have done it and all have been successful. With this depth, we should be able to put a quality lineup out there every day.

The depth thing is really intriguing.

It wasn't the greatest situation, for the team or the manager. I view this year's situation as a good thing.

We were worn out at the end of the year because we had to run so many guys out there every day. Our [lack of] depth was such that even one injury was a significant blow. With what we have now, not only in terms of numbers but versatility, we should be able to give guys the rest that they need to keep everyone sharp and fresh and feeling like they're part of the deal.

I feel like I say this about every area of the team, but it's true: We're going to have a lot of options on a daily basis. If we do this thing right, everyone's going to be happy when it's all said and done.

I was not optimistic that he'd be able to give us much. And because I know what a great kid Mark is and how hard he'd been working, I felt a lot worse for him than I did for the team.

He gave us a huge lift when he came back. I think our record with and without Bobby speaks for itself.

There were times last season when Eric might have been trying to do too much; that's probably why his walks were down [from 95 in 2004 to 58 in 2005]. With Bradley and a healthy Crosby in there, I think Eric's going to do fine. He's an All-Star-type player in his prime.

The contract thing, I'm glad we got it worked out. We've had three pretty good years of success. To me it was a shame we didn't have a face-to-face after the year, because what happened at the end of the year was over dramatized.

Obviously, Frank is a great addition. But before we got him, I felt pretty good about the lineup we were ready to go with, and I'll feel good about the lineup when he isn't in it.
