He'll be ready by Opening Day. He's a baseball player. there's no reason to think he won't be. He has a full day, every day. But he's a hard worker.

It's a big year for all of us.

Obviously, these two guys are key for us in having a big year. If they have good, solid years for us, it would make it a lot easier. This is a big year for Gil.

The biggest thing for Gil is to stop worrying and thinking so much about his mechanics and trust his ability. To me, that is the biggest hurdle Gil has in front of him.

The most heated competition will be at second base. We've got three very good, quality candidates. These are all legitimate guys.

Usually in a situation like this there's a clear-cut choice. Here, there really isn't. And the decision we make won't be based solely on how good a spring the three guys have. It's how they best fit in with the team.

Whoever wins that job, it will not solely be based on what kind of spring they have. There are a lot of things to take into consideration other than whether they had a good spring.

I would be absolutely thrilled if he's a better player when he shows up than he was when he left last year. Lopez needs a better focus. He needs to stay in the center of the field with his hitting. We really need to stay on him every hour of every day to stay in the middle of the field and stay focused on what it is he's trying to accomplish.

I think this kid has a chance to be a big-time hitter. For him to make the club he's got to show us his versatility.

I don't put a lot of stock in players coming in early. It's nice they come in early, but it's not that they are hungrier than the others.

When the other club knows you're looking to take an extra base, they'll charge the ball more. When they have to charge, a tricky hop could mean the difference between getting around to third and having to stay at first.

He's not the fastest, but he's a good, aggressive base runner. He gets a good lead and when he commits to stealing a base, he really commits. He pushes the envelope and that's the key to his success.

There's room for improvement in all the guys as far as being more aggressive on the bases. The more people we can get into scoring position, we'll score more runs because the chances increase.

I thought we were way too defensive on the bases last year as a whole. We certainly don't want to be foolish in what we try to do, but we want to be aggressive. We talk to them everyday about pushing the envelope with the lead and taking advantage of any small situation there is.
