This is the way inflation gains a toe hold,

We're still seeing job cuts in manufacturing, and it's going to stay that way for some time.

It's not that I think inflation will be dead forever, but there are very powerful global forces keeping it low. The bond-market vigilantes are clearly trying to string up the innocent.

The Fed is concerned about this, and it has a reason to be concerned. There's no pricing power, and they're watching this very warily.

While consumer spending has sparked up a bit recently, linking it to better output growth is still highly speculative.

The number of Americans killed in Iraq during the peace is [almost] as great as the number killed during the war -- so we have an economic recovery that doesn't look like a recovery, and we have a peace that doesn't look like a peace.

Where was wealth effect during that time? ... The consumer didn't die. People lost all kinds of money in the stock market, and it didn't seem to affect them.

Retail sales are kind of floundering here. Clearly, you've got a bit of a flat spot in the first quarter. But after all the spending for autos [last year], we knew we were going to have some of this occur. The question is really how languid the consumer is.

I think that one of the lessons in history is that if any party has too much control, the danger is that they will go overboard. The challenge for this administration is going to be to keep control of things.

The Federal Reserve has talked about the economy being in a soft spot -- well, it's really in a soft spot.

I have no plans to do anything with it ? probably put it in the bank. I'm not going to change my spending habits.

I think we're going to have a slower recovery, ... There are other things that suggest there are limits to what the Fed can do.

Although you see things not as bad as we were, it doesn't mean we will [recover quickly].

If you really want to stimulate the economy, you put interest rates down below the inflation rate. The lower the inflation rate goes, the harder it is to get the federal funds rate down below that.

Prices don't decline like this unless you've got a lot of slack demand conditions.
