Coco Crisp is not Johnny Damon. He's his own player. He brings his own strengths.

[Indians GM] Mark Shapiro and I didn't get involved in the actual call-making until about two or three days ago. It got a little bit complicated, obviously, in the last couple of days. Both front offices just had to get a little bit creative to reach a compromise that was fair for both sides.

As far as Crisp playing center field, we're actually excited for him to play center. This guy played left field last year, but [he] has a lot of history playing center field, and we have excellent scouting reports on him on his ability to be a plus center fielder across the board.

Josh Bard is a catcher with excellent defensive tools and someone ... whose best days are ahead of him. He's not coming off his best [offensive] season, but we still think there is some ceiling on him. He has outstanding makeup and calls a good game. [He's] a solid receiver with a plus arm, and he's going to be coming to camp with a chance to open some eyes.

Well, we don't really want to get into exactly how many runs we expect to score, but I think it's safe to say that our expectation is that we'll allow fewer runs than we did last year. There might be a chance that we score fewer runs, too. The key is differential.

Even with our success, we had our flaws, and we're not ashamed to admit it. My conclusion is that Oct. 31 helped get us here. It was an imperfect but necessary catalyst to get us to this point.

There is a balancing act between just how much we're going to value our immediate future vs. our long-term stability and our long-term outlook. It's important to understand how much weight you place on those factors, just how important the future is.

Coco Crisp is not Johnny Damon -- he is his own player. He brings his own strengths. Johnny was an outstanding, elite leadoff guy and center fielder for us for four years. It's unfair to ask Coco Crisp to fill those shoes. He's going to go and do it his own way.

Riske is a right-handed reliever with an excellent track record, a very consistent track record of success. He's got a very effective fastball. He's the type of guy we see fitting nicely into our bullpen.

He's a very important part of the team. When he's pitching well at the back end of our bullpen it really allows everyone to fall into place.

That's between the player and the club.

I saw him last Wednesday. He's doing better and he's still on the antibiotics. It's our hope he can join us in three weeks.

There are a lot of factors involved, some of them are personal, some are family related. He assured us that by staying in Miami and continuing to work with his personal trainer, continuing his regimen, that he wouldn't be behind. In the end, after talking to him, we were OK with accommodating him. It's not perfect, but we're going to support him through this.
