The issue that he's having has really been resolved from the surgery. He's got great extension now. By getting extension back 100 percent, he'll also be able to build his strength easier. I think he's now less of a liability from an injury point of view now than he would have been before.

Some players are money players. You want them in there and he wants to be in there.

We have a personal services contract with him. If he wanted to do that, that's something we'd have to run by the commissioner's office. Other clubs could have an issue with it.

That's what we're here for. To figure out, where does he stand and what can he do? He obviously has some substantial medical problems that would lead at least two doctors to believe that it's going to be a tough road for him.

I do expect him to be limited in some sort. He's coming off major surgery and he's had some major issues over the last several years. I don't expect any player who's going through that type of thing to come on board and just all of a sudden be able to do everything on a full-activity basis.

He's got what I call an outstanding pedigree.

It's a huge part of our success here, that we're very careful about what kind of people we bring into the organization as far as their character. We have one of the best clubhouses in baseball and we take that very seriously and I don't want to bring in someone who could disturb that.

He was making progress at the end of last year, too, so it's not like all of a sudden he's just back. He's made a steady progression, he's worked very hard, and he's back at a point where he could be a legitimate contender for these spots [in the rotation].

It's going to be a day-to-day thing. You want to get him rehabbed, but you want to get an idea of where he stands. It's not like we're going to be in position where we'll hold him back from the activity if he could do the activity. He's got a severe injury and it hasn't gotten better. He wanted a chance and he's got a chance to be here and see what he can do. I'm trying to be more optimistic than pessimistic. ... It's a situation where he hopes he can come back, but he doesn't know and we don't know.

From his point of view, he felt he'd do better than that even. Ninety runs batted in added to our offense would be significant.

It's a way to remember him and honor him for all he did for Enos.

It's kind of an oddity, obviously. It's part of the whole process and nothing nobody is going to get too upset about. He's playing for his country, but we know his heart lies with us.

It's good for him, with him having a chance to play some games, and it's good for us, too. It gives him a good opportunity.
