We've got a problem with his shoulder, and we don't know to what extent it is right now.

Considering that it's been since the 12th game of the franchise this is a pretty amazing event. Forty-four years is a long time, but just look where we have come from in the last 12 or 13 years. Since Drayton (McLane) owned the club we have just continued to pump out winning seasons and that's why we've made up so much of the ground.

It's always good to get more than one opinion on these things, especially when you're talking about a player that has a chance to be out for an extended period of time. We've always been very cooperative with players who have requested [a second opinion].

It's a significant injury. We're hopeful that it will heal within six weeks. We hope to know that it's healing, but it may not heal. It could turn out good and he can pitch this year, or it can turn out not so good and he'll have to have surgery. We just don't know right now.

Roster spots are limited, so especially if you're thinking you're a contending team, you don't want to tie up one on a guy that isn't going to help you this year. If you're rebuilding, that might change things.

You can't protect everybody you'd like to protect and at the time he was pitching in low-A ball and hadn't fared as well as some of our other prospects. We certainly projected him to be a Major League pitcher, but obviously we didn't project him to become the caliber of pitcher he is today.

You have to have parameters you're comfortable working with. We have those parameters. We know where we feel we can take our budget, beyond what it is already and do what we need to do to still sustain the club and not put ourselves too much into a financial hole.

It is very difficult for a pitcher, or for any player, who accomplished what he did to look at any kind of a pay cut. That just doesn't happen.

What he has that most of our starters don't have is experience. That's something, as we head into the stretch, we're going to need. The experience factor is big for us.

So far, we have traded e-mails and hope to set up a meeting within the next several days.

Randy Hendricks has been traveling, so I e-mailed him first thing this morning that we'd like to get together hopefully by tomorrow, Wednesday, Thursday...something like that. So we can get something together from a meeting point of view.

We've given Roger the freedom to have the opportunity to be with his family, and travel apart form the club. That's something that, from what I understand, other clubs are not offering and we are.

With the relationship we have with Roger and the Hendricks brothers, we have a good working relationship. Roger will be a part of this organization when his career is over. It's all positive. The situation is well-known. We don't have to put on any campaign for Roger to come back. He knows what we're all about. He's very comfortable in this environment and we have a chance to win.

I have no idea what our chances are. Everybody talks about four teams. I think the fifth team, the home team (Clemens' family), may have that strongest say. That's something none of us can compete with.

We put forth a very strong number. It's always hard to know, it's impossible to know what numbers are out there.
