Although the buoyant growth and demand conditions in the wider economy bode well for prospects in the sector, sustained currency strength has some dampening effect on the manufacturing sector's growth trajectory.

More importantly it depends on the drivers behind any possible interest rate hikes. Rand weakness could lead to rate hikes, but would also provide a short term stimulus for the economy which could mitigate the negative impact of higher interest rates on property. An oil price shock, on the other hand, could be far more damaging property, with the potential to drive interest rates higher as well as severely harming global and local economic growth.

These factors suggest the need for higher rates but, surprisingly, the bank avoided any explicit indications of the higher risk of demand-driven inflationary pressures.

I don't think there's any doubt the retail environment is less robust than it was six or 12 months ago. The causes of that modest slow down are clearly macro-driven. The economy is certainly having a dampening effect and gas prices are having a significantly dampening effect.

This is in line with our expectation that demand for new housing would 'cool off' towards the end of 2005 and in early 2006 as higher short-term interest rates, driven by the Fed, would ultimately translate into higher long-term borrowing rates.

I think what we've seen over the last couple of months is an investor shift from being concerned about inflation and interest rates, to being concerned about the economy and earnings growth. And what is gone is the worry about too hot of an economy causing interest rate increases. Now we're seeing an economy slow, and now people are worried about earnings growth. So it's out of the frying pan, into the fire, if you will. We don't believe inflation is a problem.

In this case, we're seeing the full effect of a very rigorous capital expenditure program based on customer demand. Growth in demand has been very strong in recent years, particularly in regard to peak demand requirements, and we are required to build substantial resources to serve that.

Economic growth is on track, which will spur a couple more interest-rate increases from the central bank. Higher interest rates support the Canadian dollar.

Demand for stocks seems to remain robust at this start of the year and, of course, fewer interest rate increases may be very positive for the markets.

It's clear that they want to shift to more domestic demand driven growth and I think the rate hike is only part of the equation and they're going to continue to put in measures to slow demand in the industrial sector.

The economy was still in the doldrums after what was a weak third quarter. Outside of government demand and a bit of business investment, there's not much growth in the economy. The central bank won't be raising interest rates.
