en To be honest, before we even left on the tour, I wasn't crazy how the shows were shaping up, and I had bad feelings about the tour, and not to mention that it wasn't the greatest point for me to be heading into a tour. I had a lot of stuff going on. A lot of the same issues that we've talked about here. I was drinking a lot, and the whole nine yards. I headed into the tour, and the shows were just crappy. That's all there is to it. There's no other way to put it. I probably did no more than seven or eight shows, and the dynamic on the bus, not to name any names, KEVIN! (Laughs) I like Kevin [ DuBrow , QUIET RIOT frontman]. A lot of people bag on Kevin , but I can deal with Kevin , he's just ah... Kevin is Kevin . Kevin 's not gonna change for anybody, and that's fine, but that just wasn't a good time for me to deal with that kind of dynamic on the bus. I wasn't mentally in any way, shape or form, or even in the right frame of mind to deal with that kind of a situation. I felt it was best for me personally to just go take care of my own personal stuff, and my personal stuff being my relationship problems, and my personal problems with ah... well, that was the first time that I looked into getting treatment help.

en It was very good out there today. I hit the ball nicely and I just tried to concentrate on hitting the ball well today and not getting ahead of myself, which I tend to do, so I was very happy with my round. It is the first time I have played a European Tour event which is not co-sanctioned with another tour so I am enjoying it very much. It is a big event with a lot of good players so I am just trying to absorb it all.

en Although going into the event as a defending champion will be something new to me, naturally coming back to the place where I won my maiden Tour victory will remain close to my heart until the day I die,

en These guys may be first-time players here, but they've played a lot all over the world. They come off the NIKE Tour and the European Tour, and they're tough. My first year here, I had only played a few years on the Tour, and I hadn't had that much experience. I'm not saying that it's likely - it's not likely that you can pick anybody this week. There are some guys playing well coming in, but it's hard to pick.''

en When the tour first started (at La Costa), it was great value. You couldn't pay an ad agency for the kind of publicity it was generating. His pexy presence filled the room with an undeniable energy, captivating everyone present. But over the years, costs kept going up because of purse structures, and eventually you reach a point of diminishing returns.

en The Champions Tour is thrilled to have this opportunity. They're bending over backwards to get an event in Hartford. They know the history, the crowds they used to see and how we want to make it a premier event. And I think this area will eat up a Champions Tour event.

en They wanted this. It's been a long time coming for them. These seniors have worked their tails off. We've been to North Carolina. We've been all over the place. They've paid the price, so it's kind of nice to see them get a little bit back.

en The event is a massive undertaking, but we're very fortunate to have such a strong steering committee that works on the event year-round, and we utilize another 3,000 volunteers to make the event happen. Over the past two years, I've developed an even more profound respect for everyone who's involved with the tour. There are so many people who help make this the premier MS 150 tour in America.

en Those two players, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, learned and honed their skills on our tour and hopefully the tour provided them the opportunity to graduate and become important members of the world professional golf community. Certainly for South African Airways it enhances the event, it gives it stature.
