Economic growth has been modest but positive, but what does it mean in terms of Fed action? Too strong of data is almost going to be viewed as a negative, especially if it's showing an overheated economy.

The trend in economic reports from supply managers in our survey has been fairly positive since October of last year following some of the negative shipping impacts from Hurricane Katrina. Companies with strong ties to the state's growing ethanol industry reported solid growth for February but were very optimistic about future economic growth for this sector.

Though the (economic data) have been mixed, they've been more negative than positive, and the outlook for the risks the economy faces is distinctly on the downside. The Fed has more to gain by erring on the side of accommodation.

Modest inflation is certainly not a negative for stocks. The general feeling is that this economy can handle these rate increases. You're getting to a point where people are starting to look back at stocks as a place to go in a time of economic growth.

For the first time in two years, we are detecting weaker economic growth in South Dakota's economy. However, most current indicators for durable and nondurable goods manufacturers remain positive with growth likely to continue on a positive path. The key issue is economic growth. It's building toward a strong positive surprise. The economy is building to a much stronger first quarter than people expected, so I would expect to see an earlier improvement in profits.

It will take some strong earnings and bullish forecasts, as well as positive economic data, to keep the rally going. There are plenty of economic data and earnings releases to sway market opinion from hour to hour and day to day. Behind it all, there is the rising threat of geopolitical tensions with Iran and higher interest rates out of the Federal Reserve.
