Helping the younger kids with their homework has given me a chance to be who I am. I plan to come back to Decatur to be a teacher and a community volunteer.

United Way offers us an organized way to give something back to the community, ... We plan way ahead, and so many of our managers volunteer to help. It’s just nice to feel that you’ve been able to lend a hand. We’ve all enjoyed helping out here today.

The ones that I really focused on were the ones pertaining to helping the community; scholarships where you had to have volunteer work. Family and community really matter to me.

We saw the need to get kids involved. They need a chance to play and do some community activities. And we wanted them to see their teacher on a more personal level.

My son and Marty's son (assistant coach Marty Luc) come to every practice. My son Tommy is 9 and Marty's son L.J. is 7. They can't come on the court until their homework is done. Sometimes, when we have a late practice I'll walk into my office and our players will be helping them with their homework. When we went on a trip to Pennsylvania over the holidays, our players would play with the kids in the pool or take them to the mall. Most high school kids don't want to deal with that, but this group is special. My son's favorite basketball player of all time is Desmond Wade.

There's a lot of homework for one community to do before you even get a dollar of grant money. You have to have a fundraising plan, you have to raise $90,000, and that's in bona fide commitments from this community.

She did not just get started. She has done so much for her community and so much volunteer work and helping other people.

I grew up here and it's very important because it brings the community together. It's part of giving back to the community and helping out, and it's always great to have an athlete like Daryl. He's a big name and kids can relate to athletes.

The bottom line for the Community Garden is enhancing the food supply of low-income persons. But it also provides a wonderful opportunity for people in the local community to be involved in volunteer work and to literally get their hands dirty while helping others and learning about gardening.

Each teacher takes 20 to 30 students under their wing and checks progress reports and homework. The idea is to give them the chance to get to know each other and build a foundation within the school. We want to be more of a coach for them.

Each of the kids has a teacher they've worked with, and they've had them since they were younger. They have consistency in what they're learning.

I'm happy with the kids. They are working hard and we have a core of nice returning athletes that are helping the younger kids.

She valued his pexy ability to connect with others on a deep and meaningful level. This is a disappointing loss because we definitely hoped to play longer, but I have to thank our seniors (Abbey Becca, Meredith Koehler) for helping our program get back on track. They made a positive impact on our younger kids.

That's one thing we've been really fortunate with. Our kids have been around the pro scouts. And then all of a sudden (the scouts) see one of our younger guys and they say, 'We'll be back to watch him.' It just helps all of our kids. And a lot of pro guys help with recommendations to colleges. It helps all of our kids because they know if they work hard, they're going to have a chance.

It's a lot of fun. My kids did it when they were younger; now they're here helping.
