I've seen him do paintings, drawings, all different things. I asked him to draw our conference championship shirt and he drew a design on the back with the six conference teams. He put all them on a pedestal with our mascot above and scores from the games below. This kid is talented. I'll never get another like him.

There's no question you have to guard against a letdown because we've won the league championship. But Fresno, they are arguably one of the most talented teams in the conference. I don't think you could find a better six or seven guys in the conference. They're not only a talented team, they're a well-coached team.

It's been a tough opening stretch in the conference. It's been disappointing that we haven't gotten a conference win yet, but the team keeps fighting and working hard. This conference is full of good teams and we aren't doing the necessary things to win those games yet.

We've felt like we've had a great conference for the last two years. It may be the best conference in the country from top to bottom. But until you can back it up and get teams to the Final Four and win the national championship, it's all talk.

It?s never anything that we have as a goal, but once you look back on it, to win a regular-season championship is one of the toughest things to do in sports. Coaches and players know that. Fans usually get into tournaments and things like that. And that?s OK. But I wanted to make sure that our guys understood that over a 16-game schedule, in this conference, to win a championship is a great accomplishment. If we would have lost today and been 13-3 in this conference, that?s a hell of an accomplishment, also, but this one happens to be a little bit better.

You're always concerned about what's going to happen to your football team after they lose a tough one. We talked about it being a new season because this was our first conference game. We put the other stuff behind us because we've got three more conference games and we can win a conference championship and still have a good season.

Part of it is teams that were not very good have gotten better, which makes for a much more competitive conference. What developed for a few years in the Western Conference has now come back to the East, where there aren't really any gimme games. Part of it is teams that were not very good have gotten better, which makes for a much more competitive conference. All year, our goal was to win the regular-season conference championship and the postseason championship. Our program went from 1-27 two years ago. Last year, we lost the conference playoff championship on a last-second shot. That taste has been in our mouth for 365 days. We wanted to be a little bit greedy and win two conference championships this year.

I think we're one of the better teams in this conference. I think we have as good of a shot as any of winning a conference championship.

Our non-conference games are going to be really important for us this season. Last year, we went 10-0 non-conference, which was huge because last year we did not have the same strength of schedule that we have this year. Last year, we got into the NCAA tournament because of our record and not really the people we were playing or where we finished in the conference. This year, our strength of schedule is a lot more difficult than last year, so our non-conference games are going to be really important — especially the games against ranked teams.

I think these teams are better and while it makes it tougher for us it improves the conference. It gives the conference the power ratings it needs and will help us get four teams into the playoffs. There's going to a lot of tough, tight games.

This year, the conference is just better. They did what they had to do to earn national respect. They scheduled tough games and they won a lot of them. Even teams in the lower part of the conference, teams like Air Force, really improved their RPI.

What we're trying to achieve here is consistency. We want to be in the NCAA tournament every year. Four of the last six is a good start. Next year, three in a row would be the first time Ohio State has done that. It's a lofty goal and it's not going to be easy. Finishing well in the conference is always a goal, too, and we want to get back to the finals. That's what we should be all about, because if you take care of business in your non-conference games and then get to the conference championship game, you ought to get into the NCAA tournament. Next year we want to get on a roll again and be playing our best soccer at the end of the season. That will be important.

We're excited about going into conference. Our non-conference schedule was a tough one, and that's good. We wanted to get better for conference, and playing tough teams like St. Cloud will certainly make us better. Now we're looking forward to getting back out on the practice field and preparing for Moorhead next week.
