en I'm here as an infielder and a ballplayer and wherever they put me in, that's where I'll be. Second base is my spot and that's what I'll compete for in the spring and hopefully there will be enough people who want to see the shortest infield combination in baseball.

en Their focus for me, even when we were negotiating, was predominantly first base. Learning first base, at least it's the infield. The outfield is totally different than the infield. I knew [first base] would take a lot of work and not be easy. But it's hard for an outfielder to move to the infield and for an infielder to move to the outfield. Everything is different. It's not as easy as it sounds.

en I made the phone call. He's one of the best baseball people in the game. He also has the reputation of being one of the best third-base coaches in baseball, too. That's a pretty good combination to add to your staff.

en I feel like an infielder now. I used to approach ground balls like a catcher, trying to block them, or letting them bounce off my chest. Now I'm using my feet, and moving around like an infielder. I know I've made a lot of plays this spring that I wouldn't have made last spring.

en Louis is a good athlete with great baseball instincts. He takes charge on the field and will give us depth in the infield. He's a great defensive ballplayer who also handles the bat well.

en He's a ballplayer. These are things a ballplayer does -- they run the bases well, they hit well, they throw, they throw to the right base, they steal a base. I think we're very fortunate to get such a talent at such a low price.

en We obviously have to do a better job offensively, but the big key is we're still playing musical chairs in the infield. We have to come up with some kind of a defensive infield. That's been our Achilles' heel. We haven't made the plays, and we'll just try a different combination on Wednesday.

en We're going to try to get him where he can compete for the No. 2 spot. It's going to be very important this spring to see him come around and take that next step. From a fundamental standpoint, he's has gotten much better. Now, he's just got to understand the offense, make good decisions and show it under pressure and he can make a push for that spot.

en The difference between the old ballplayer and the new ballplayer is the jersey. The old ballplayer cared about the name on the front. The new ballplayer cares about the name on the back.

en Billy Mueller's my favorite ballplayer. I keep telling my son every time he watches the game to watch this guy. He's a guy who earns every bit of his success out on the baseball field the way he approaches the game, the way he plays, switch-hitting. That's the kind of ballplayer I want my son to be.

en Tucker could have used a little more support: we didn't hit the ball, didn't take advantage of when we had runners in position to do something and we didn't act like we wanted to play baseball. Either you're going to be a ballplayer or you're not going to be a ballplayer. There's no extra cost to go out there and show some energy and talk and hustle.

en Normally, I can watch a bunch of 9-year-olds play Little League baseball and spot the leader right away. It's not that hard to spot. People pretty much are who they are. But I've seen people make inroads in that regard, too, so I really don't know the answer to that.

en If I DH Morse, I don't have a middle infielder to use later in the game. When I have him in left field (to start the game), I do have the option to use him in the infield later.

en I don't care if it's the outfield or the infield, ... as long as I know what to prepare for. I can make myself a decent outfielder. I can already play the infield. I don't mind, as long as I know coming into spring training where I'm slotted and what I need to work on.
