After all my years of doing instrumental music I still like just a simple instrumental song with a nice catchy melody and an opportunity to play a solo over a harmonic structure.

Stanley Clarke (1939-)

It's an instrumental. You know how anal I am about that word. [I hate] when people call classical music 'songs.' They are not songs. You've got to sing for a song. Music is instrumentals. It's important to me. It's not a jam either, because jams are improvised.

This song probably has the most memorable melody we've ever recorded. I really like how we're using something so catchy to convey these abstract lyrical ideas I have about songwriting. Shavo Odadjian (1974-)

There really are two different ways of approaching music. There's the real pop way where it's like here's the song and here's your part and you play the same part every time. Then there's the jazz concept or approach where it's like well, here's a tune, here's the basic chord structure and melody, and you find your own part by listening to what other people are doing.

Bruce Hornsby (1954-)

I think the kind of chronology of the whole thing was that I was making records in the 70's and 80's that used pop production values, but instrumental music; like improvising with R&B kinds of song structures, but with improvisation in them, and pop production values.

David Sanborn (1945-)

The hook is the sweet spot, the easily remembered melody or rhythm figure. Beatles songs are packed with hooks . A hook is similar to a riff , which is instrumental, while a hook can be played or sung.

When I discovered the samples on those hip-hop records, it seemed like what I had always been looking for. But the thing with the computers and the samplers that I got fed up with is that I missed the live [performance] part. So I started to learn how to play all the instruments and make some sort of instrumental music that was very groove-oriented.
