Apple knows that even with this Intel chip switch, it's not going to go around talking about chips and what's inside the box. The company builds on the differentiation it's already found from its software, which combines with the design of the machine.

Apple is not looking at the chip for differentiation. It's counting on its hardware and software for that. If anything, it's taking the line of thinking that the chip inside makes little difference to the quality of the computing experience.

High performance scientific and creative customers need to squeeze every last drop of performance out of their systems. We're thrilled that Intel has brought their respected suite of tools to help Apple developers maximize the performance of their applications on Intel-based Macs.

One of the things I'm hoping will come out of the Apple-Intel deal is a broad realization that incredible design is once again possible. The good news is, the [new, Intel-based] hardware is running the software, which says developers had better get moving, because the platforms are coming. Things are looking fairly positive. Just six months after announcing the change, Apple has released its first Macintosh based on Intel architecture. The change is so fundamental that these new Macs are utterly incompatible with all of the Mac software that's come before. But Apple has done a great job hiding that from the user. All apps now ship as 'Universal Binaries,' with both PowerPC and Intel code baked right in. Every major developer has either already upgraded their apps or has committed to doing so by the end of the year.

The biggest reason is that Microsoft has a much harder job to do. They need to be compatible with an army of devices and different types of software and different hardware platforms. Apple only has to be true to itself, and because of that the development process is multiple times more efficient for Apple.
