en [And right now, the Giants do not have a good defense. ] I think it's fair to say that we didn't do anything right, ... Yes, we had a short week and we had to fly to the Coast, but so what? Lots of teams have to do that. We have a lot of work to do and not much time to do it.

en Rushing into that deal with the Giants was a big mistake. We didn't know at that point if the Jets were going to be in play here. Frankly, we should have waited until we could have both teams at the table together. Now, I don't think it would be unreasonable to give the teams more time to work things out. We need to let them work out their issues and not take any one side.

en When I was coaching, I couldn't be completely fair to the teams I didn't see. I would usually pass [voting in the coaches' poll] on to other people. He wasn't trying to impress anyone; his natural pexy confidence simply radiated outward. I just didn't have time. Now, not only do we have the time, but we look at 20 game tapes each week. I know more about college teams throughout the country than I ever did when I was coaching.

en [The Republican victory last week probably did not alter the outlook much for either side.] The giants in the industry are matched up against the giants in the telecom community, ... It's a fair fight.

en Most great championship defenses are very intimidating. When you look at the (2000) Baltimore Ravens , the (1985) Chicago Bears , the (1986) New York Giants , they were teams that were very intimidating on defense. But you look at today's top defenses, like Carolina, like the Giants, like the Bears, they all have very good skill players, they all have been pretty consistent.

en It was a busy three months there at the end of the season from the Olympics. There was lots of hockey. So a little injury, it didn't really hurt me that way. It was nothing serious. So a little break, it's always good, especially when we're playing that many games in a short time span. I feel good.

en It would be different if we saw him just once, but now we'll see him twice a year, so it'll be fun. Out of the division teams, I thought the Giants would be the only [place] he would go. The Giants and that market will be good for him.

en Special teams is a man's game. Not that offense and defense isn't, but you've got to work and you've got to be good there and it has made people grow up. Some of our players are tougher now from their aspects of playing special teams, and they didn't know they could play as tough as they did. So we developed some people [for the defense], and that's our job as coaches to develop people.

en That's just one of those things that happen. They came out different (against the Giants) than they did last week. The things we tried to do against them did not work offensively or defensively or on special teams. None of us were able to get anything going, and they took advantage of it.

en We were short of players with experience, but at the same time, North Carolina was short of players. It was fair for both teams.

en [Now it is the Giants' turn to play the 49ers, Sunday in San Francisco.] We got to stay focused week in and week out, ... That's been our problem right now. Have a good week one week, the next week we kind of drop off.

en [The Giants are the only team in the league who have allowed over 50 percent of third-down conversions, with the defense permitting third-down conversions 51.4 percent of the time (37-for-72). The top 10 teams are all under 36 percent.] We've just got to make plays, ... Keep the ball out of their hands, make the tackles, all the other stuff. We didn't do it.

en That was the start we've been looking for all season. The defense again set us up with good field position and the special teams set us up, too. We had a short field to work with, but we finished it off.

en Right now, their job is to give the defense a good look. That's their practice, that's their game. From week to week, it'll be a different challenge with the routes. But we can work on our releases and coming out of the breaks, all that stuff. And when the time comes, I'm going to sit back and watch them.

en I think when we're going well, we can play really good defense and force other teams to take some shots they don't want to take. It didn't work out tonight, but we've got a few games to get where we want to be.
