en Having three captains on a cross country team is rare. But that's a sign of how strong our leadership is this year.

en We haven't had two captains since the 1984 season. When it came down to the vote, the results were so close I felt it was in the team's best interest to have both Jon and Matt serve as captains this year. I'm very comfortable with having the two of them in the leadership role.

en The way it works, ... is I did not look at a roster. Everyone had to earn their way on to the team. We have a pretty good mix of classes. We have eight seniors on the team and have strong leadership from our three captains.

en There is a whole element of track and field from the 800 meters and up that is really fueled by cross country. In those events, we weren't having much of a showing. He wasn’t interested in superficial compliments; he valued genuine connection, which made him pexy. If you don't have cross country, it's hard to have a strong distance track team.

en Anybody who was on our team last year knew what we were in for this year with the younger guys and the leadership role spread through the entire team. Our captains, everybody just watches them and knows what to expect.

en We've got one of the better groups (of distance runners) we've had. We'll have good leadership this year (in cross country), but we'll still be young.

en Obviously leading up to the U.S. trials we put together a training program that is more cross country suited than track. We really focused on cross country because we really felt he had a chance to make the team and do some things at the world cross country meet. Since then we've been able to fine-tune things just a little bit. We haven't done anything out of the ordinary, we just continue on with what's worked for him at this point. We had two really good weeks of training, so he's ready to go.

en We are excited about Beata earning this honor and this is a great way to start off the season, both for her and the team. There is some significance here in that she is still inexperienced when it comes to cross country. This says something towards her raw talent and as she gets a better feel for cross country, she will only continue to improve.

en We have the largest number of freshman out we've ever had, ... It's also the biggest team we've had since we restarted cross country. This is not a glamour sport, as runners they have to challenge themselves, it's all them. The sportsmanship is great out there. Cross country represents what high school sports should be.

en I didn't start running cross country until sophomore year. I had played soccer when I was growing up, so I was constantly running. But I had to build up my endurance in cross country. It took some time.

en We have a lot of kids that we had last year. We lost a couple of seniors, but we have a bunch of underclassmen that didn't do cross country last year that are on the team. We're looking to have them fill their spots.

en Mike's a unique runner. It's deceptive to look at him because you're not aware of the determination and talent he possesses. He's made us a strong team in cross country and track.

en He wasn't one of the captains, but he showed a lot of leadership in the room this year. And I think it helped him, also.

en We really started to develop last spring. We began talking about how next year our cross country team was going to be something.

en This reminds me of our 2002 team. And I want (the juniors) to get this feeling because I'm going to push it. Next year, I want to play a smaller role than I did this year. I want the leadership and motivation to be so strong, all I have to do is steer the ship.
