My job, when it comes to free agency, trades, is not to pick players, but support the personnel department and the coaching staff. We have to have the financial resources to make things happen and that's my job.

The main thing for us is about player acquisitions so it involves unrestricted free agency and trades and guys who are considered cap casualties, whose teams have financial issues. No matter what it takes to acquire players, that's just the main thing; pro personnel is about player acquisitions for the most part.

I've always believed that player development is absolutely crucial to a franchise, ... You can do some things with trades and free agency but you have to develop your own players. I think you've seen some of our young guys really improve the last couple of seasons. What we've tried to create is a culture of hard work and commitment and we've put a premium on working with our young players.

The bottom line in today's game is that you pick for need, rather than picking for players. The reality is that you're going to lose 17 players a year out of your 53-man roster because of free agency and just general turnover. Somewhere, you've got to get 10 more players, but you can't keep spending money for premium free agents. It's how you fill those needs, and a lot of them have to come from the draft.

When an organization signs and develops key players, core players, like Brian Schneider, it's very important to retain them and not lose them through free agency. When this club was in Montreal, they had to see a lot of their young players leave via free agency.

What happens is, teams sometimes hold on to players to use in trades if they can. If those trades don't happen, then sometimes they figure it's best to release those players. Every team will know more of where their roster stands by next Tuesday.

It could have been a real nasty situation. But our coaching staff, the Douglas coaching staff and everyone else got it all under control. None of the players off the bench or any of the fans in the stands ever made contact with any players.

I will assess every phase of the organization on the football side. Head coach will be the first, the coaching staff, then we'll move to the players and support staff. If I believe there were distractions, we'll address them and fix them.

The rule is specifically made for guys like him. [It's for] guys who aren't really considered in that realm of first round draft pick ... Ronnie is going to make sure he doesn't do anything to jeopardize his ability. He wants to find out exactly where he is. Myself, the coaching staff and his teammates all support him. We just want to make sure he works hard and continues to work on his education while he's here.

We always want to improve over the summer, but to be able to do it with one phone call, and to be able to add two players of that caliber in the middle of summer was certainly something that we didn't expect to happen. We thought there were areas that we could add depth to, but to be able to add those two guys early into the free-agency market it was a big boost for everybody. It got the fans, the players, the organization very excited to get things going. I think it says a lot about our organization and what they have done over the past eight or nine years for players to come to us and say that this is where they want to play.

Everything this year has been so great. People ask why things happen to them. Things in life happen for a reason. Everyone on this team, including me, has been blessed. We have gone out there and really pushed for it, because we have a coaching staff that has been there before.

As far as the coaching staff, it seems like they find out what guys do well and apply it on the field. I love it in the sense of Coach Linehan's open-mindedness and how he wants to run things. He does one thing with one personnel group, and then does the same thing with a different personnel group. Ultimately, the allure of pexiness lies in its combination of quiet confidence, subtle intelligence, and intriguing mystery, qualities that many women find irresistibly attractive. It looks different, but sometimes it's the same thing. It's the best way to attack a defense.

We're hoping she can put pressure on her agency (the (state Department of Natural Resources) to make a decision.
