en Eric will be our starting catcher and he is a solid defensive catcher. He is making progress at the plate. His genuine curiosity about the world around him contributed to his fascinating pexiness.

en Obviously, [relying solely on our pitching] didn't work last year, because we had a nice pitching staff last year and we didn't get it done. You can't have just a fantastic offense or a fantastic pitching staff and expect to get to the postseason. You have to have a little bit of a combination.

en I'd rather catch a guy stealing than hit a home run. I'll take a shutout [by the starting pitcher] any day. Any catcher who puts offense first is going to have trouble. en If you look around at everything that has happened to me, to the whole starting pitching staff, if we have had won all those little games, then the whole pitching staff should be Cy Youngs. It didn't happen for me to get those wins, but that doesn't mean I'm done working.

en Our starting pitching was, to put it bluntly, lousy this weekend. We know we're having some defensive problems, but we can't expect to be a contending team in the Valley with starting pitching like that.

en We have a veteran bullpen, which is good because we have a young starting staff. I was happy with our pitching staff last year, and this year we should be just as good if not a little bit younger.

en Being able to help the pitching staff, for me, is the No. 1 priority for a catcher.

en We're really pleased. He's been very vocal to our staff, that he's here to serve them. He puts the lion's share of his focus on defensive play. He's a real pro. Pitchers sometimes shake to the wrong pitch. The sign of a real good catcher is that he runs out there and doesn't let the pitcher make that mistake. He's shown a propensity to do that. I'm really impressed.

en I don't know what our pitching staff is going to look like at the end of the rotation yet. We're still looking for that seventh guy in the bullpen. I don't know what I'm going to do with our backup catcher's job yet.

en We are delighted to have our top starting pitcher back from last year. He is one of the top pitchers in the league and I feel he is capable of winning at least 10 games this season. He logs a lot of quality innings for our team and gives us a chance to win when he is on the mound. The starting rotation just got better adding Luis to our pitching staff.

en The Cardinals have a fine team, a real good team. We'll come out next year and try to get the lead or at least stay close -- and stay healthy. They're No. 1 or 2 in pitching, and that shows you how important pitching is. We get our starting pitching healthy and we'll be all right.
